Role Description The SMSU Wrestling Graduate Assistant Coach is a full-time, on-site position located in Marshall, MN. This role supports the head wrestling coach in all aspects of the wrestling program, including planning and conducting practices, assisting with strength and conditioning sessions, and providing technical and tactical instruction to student-athletes. The Graduate Assistant Coach helps with recruiting responsibilities, match-day preparation, video review, and the development of training plans that align with program goals and NCAA regulations. Day-to-day duties also include mentoring student-athletes on academic and personal development, maintaining equipment and practice areas, coordinating travel and logistics, and supporting campus and community engagement activities. The position is designed to provide hands-on coaching experience while the individual pursues graduate studies.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge in Wrestling and Wrestling Coaching, with the ability to teach technique, strategy, and match preparation.
- Proven Coaching and Training skills, including planning and leading effective practices, strength and conditioning, and athlete development.
- Strong Communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with staff, recruit prospective student-athletes, and build positive relationships with team members.
- Eligibility for admission to a relevant graduate program and willingness to balance academic and coaching responsibilities.
- Prior collegiate wrestling experience (competing and/or coaching) strongly preferred.
- Understanding of NCAA rules and a commitment to ethical conduct and student-athlete welfare.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel for competitions and recruiting.
- Current first aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain upon hire is beneficial.
Compensation
Successful applicants will receive 18 credit hours of a tuition waiver (Full-time Graduate School), plus an $8,000 stipend, and the opportunity to generate additional income through camps an the MWC.
