JOB TITLE: Law & Legal Studies Teacher - The Individual and the Law
JOB SUMMARY
The Law & Legal Studies Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-based instruction focused on the foundations and functions of the American legal system. This role emphasizes helping students understand their rights and responsibilities as individuals under the law, while developing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and civic engagement skills necessary for college, career, and community readiness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instruction & Curriculum Delivery
- Design and implement lessons aligned to the The Individual and the Law curriculum.
- Teach foundational concepts of the American legal system, including:
- Types of law (criminal, civil, constitutional, statutory)
- Structure and function of courts
- Landmark Supreme Court cases and their impact
- Facilitate student understanding of the relationship between individuals and the law.
Student Engagement & Skill Development
- Promote critical thinking through case analysis, debates, mock trials, and real-world scenarios.
- Integrate social studies literacy skills such as:
- Reading and interpreting legal texts
- Analyzing primary and secondary sources
- Constructing evidence-based arguments
- Foster civic awareness and responsibility among students.
Assessment & Data Use
- Develop and implement formative and summative assessments aligned to course standards.
- Use student data to inform instruction and provide targeted support.
- Provide timely, actionable feedback to support student growth.
Classroom Environment
- Create a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment that encourages student voice and discourse.
- Establish clear expectations for behavior and academic integrity.
- Build a classroom culture rooted in respect for diverse perspectives.

- Participate in professional learning to enhance ability to provide engaging online instruction a. Participate in required Professional Learning that leads to virtual teaching endorsement
- Clearly articulates deadlines, schedules, and procedures to students and parents to ensure that students complete coursework in a timely manner

- Teacher Duties and Responsibilities
- Follows professional practices consistent with school and district policies in working with students, students’ records, parents, and colleagues

- Is available to students and parents for conferences according to district policies
- Facilitates home-school communication by such means as holding conferences, telephoning, and sending written communications

- Conducts assigned classes at the times scheduled

- Plans and coordinates purposeful assignments for paraprofessional(s), other supporting staff, and volunteer(s), and provides input to the administrative staff on the performance of these individuals.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies, Political Science, History, Law-related field, or Education
- Valid teaching certification (or eligibility) in Social Studies or related field
Preferred:
- Experience teaching law, civics, or government courses
- Background or experience in legal studies, criminal justice, or public service
- Experience with project-based or experiential learning (e.g., mock trials, simulations)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong knowledge of the American legal system and civic principles
- Ability to translate complex legal concepts into student-friendly instruction
- Skilled in facilitating discussion, debate, and critical inquiry
- Commitment to equity, student belonging, and culturally responsive teaching
- Effective classroom management and relationship-building skills
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to obtain clearance certificate from GaPSC.
Salary/Terms/Benefits:
- 190 day work year.
- Salary based on certification and experience; placement on the Adopted Salary Schedule and position supplement(s).

Salary : $48,741 - $83,671
