What are the responsibilities and job description for the CFS - PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER position at Southside Behavioral Health?

SBH is seeking a qualified individual who will be responsible for the psychiatric evaluation and management of individuals with behavioral health and/or co-occurring substance use disorder.
Responsibilities
- Completes comprehensive evaluations of individuals with behavioral health and/or co-occurring substance use disorder to determine current mental status, diagnosis, medical comorbidity treatment needs and medication needs.
- Reviews documentation by nursing staff, clinical staff, SBH staff and outside records and discusses cases as needed to determine the medication needs of individuals receiving services.
- Prescribes and orders medication in compliance with VA Board of Pharmacy regulations and guidelines and best practice standards.
- Maintains required documentation in the EHR per state and federal guidelines and SBH policy and procedure.
- Reviews individuals’ medical profiles in EHR and updates medication list as needed.
- Checks the VA Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and documents results in EHR.
- Counsels individuals and/or family members concerning appropriate use, anticipated effects and side effects of psychotropic medications.
- Provides information and education to families of individuals receiving services concerning psychiatric illness and medical comorbidity as pertains to psychiatric illness.
- Monitors individuals for adverse reactions to medications and provides individual and family education on Body Mass Index (BMI) and refers individuals for BMI follow up and primary care screenings.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Nursing from an Accredited School of Nursing.
- Nurse Practitioner licensed in VA to practice medicine and certification as a psychiatric nurse practitioner required
- At least one year of experience in a health setting, providing nursing services to individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorder preferred.
- Considerable knowledge of serious mental illness and substance abuse issues, diagnostic categories, treatment modalities, intervention techniques, counseling theories, and behavioral health services.
- Comprehensive knowledge of psychotropic medication effects and potential side effects.
- Ability to effectively intervene in a crisis situation.
- Must meet all criminal background and drug screening requirements.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record, required.
