Qualifications Required:

1. Washington State Teacher’s Certificate appropriate to secondary education with endorsements in ELA

2. Must have an EL/ESL or Bilingual Education endorsement 

3. Satisfactory evaluations

 

Qualifications Preferred:

1. Experience and/or education in working with secondary-level Multilingual Learners (MLs).

2. Successful experience working with bilingual/bicultural students, and willingness to be flexible in the scheduling/support of students.

3. Successful experience working with GLAD models of instruction; ability to work well with adults in establishing learning goals for MLs.

4. Successful experience with placing students based on assessment, and experience with the WIDA assessment and standards.

5. Demonstrated knowledge of language acquisition and the effective methods of instruction for MLs at all stages of development.

6. Prior experience teaching English at the high school level.

7. Evidence of expertise using computer technology for classroom management, instruction, communicating with stakeholders, and program promotion.

8. Evidence of participation in professional learning communities, and willingness to support a variety of PLCs and data meetings.

9. Understanding of the unique challenges faced by newcomers at the secondary level.

10. Punctual and consistent attendance.

 

Job Responsibilities:

1. Design and deliver English Language Development (ELD) instruction aligned to state standards, supporting students at varying levels of English proficiency.
2. Teach sheltered or supported content courses (e.g., ELA, social studies, or support classes) that integrate language and content objectives.
3. Differentiate instruction to meet diverse linguistic, cultural, and academic needs of multilingual learners.
4. Use data to inform instruction, including language proficiency assessments (e.g., WIDA ACCESS) and classroom-based measures.
5. Collaborate with general education teachers to co-plan, co-teach, and scaffold instruction for ML students in mainstream classes.
6. Develop and implement supports for students based on language proficiency levels and academic goals.
7. Monitor and document student progress toward English language acquisition and academic achievement.
8. Communicate regularly with families, using culturally responsive and linguistically appropriate methods.
9. Support students’ social-emotional needs, particularly those navigating acculturation, interrupted education, or migration-related experiences.
10. Advocate for equitable access to grade-level curriculum, graduation pathways, and postsecondary opportunities.
11. Integrate culturally sustaining teaching practices that affirm students’ identities and linguistic assets.
12. Participate in multidisciplinary teams (MTSS, IEP, 504, newcomer supports) and various content-based PLTs to ensure coordinated services.
13. Provide professional learning or coaching to staff on effective strategies for supporting multilingual learners.
14. Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal requirements related to multilingual learner programs.

Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 10 lbs. regularly and occasionally up to 26 lbs; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F . The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.

 

Application Procedure: In-District staff must complete an internal online application by 10:00 p.m. (PST) on or before the closing date. In-building/In-district staff will have eight school days, or eight working days during the summer to apply for a vacant position through the online application system. The employee may choose but will not be required to meet with the building administrator to understand the building practices, procedures and initiatives specific to the position to which they are applying. After eight days if an in-building employee is qualified for the position, the principal will offer the employee the position. In the case that more than one in-building employee is interested in a position, the position will be offered to the qualified and senior employee. If a position is not filled in-building after the eight day period, the position will be offered to the qualified, most senior in-district applicant, if any. Teachers with a summative evaluation score of 1 or 2 are not eligible to transfer unless agreed upon by the District and Association.

 

Out-of-District applicants must complete the online District application and attach a letter of interest, resume, valid Washington state teaching credential, and copies of transcripts with degree posted.
