Position Summary

Coordinates functions of the SUU health and safety programs for both the Office of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and the School of Aviation. Activities include safety promotion and training, safety inspections and hazard identification, accident investigation and root-cause analysis, and hazardous waste and materials management.

Essential Functions

• Manage the digital safety reporting system; analyze trends from reports to identify emerging risks.
• Lead initial incident report investigations, conduct root-cause analysis and recommend corrective actions.
• Perform regular safety inspections of campus facilities and laboratories Audit Aviation Program operating procedures of the flight line, maintenance hangars, and aircraft (fixed and rotary) to ensure compliance with FAA Part 141 and university standards
• In Aviation, conduct safety training and workshops for students and flight instructors; maintain safety bulletin boards and digital newsletters. For Campus, provide training to ensure all activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements. Conduct regular equipment inspections to ensure compliance with life safety hazards and make recommendations for replacements as appropriate.
• Coordinate the campus hazardous waste disposal program
• Support campus departments with EPA requirements.
• Serve as a core member of the Laboratory Safety Committee and Aviation Safety Committee, providing data-driven insights for policy changes
• Other duties as assigned.
  
  

Education & Experience

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree
• General knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS)
• Experience in hazard identification and/or incident investigation and root cause analysis.
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Fluent knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
• Demonstrated leadership qualities, strong human relations abilities, and excellent oral, written communication, and presentation skills.
  
  

Preferred Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Aviation Safety, Aerospace Science, or a related technical field
• Certified Flight Instructor (CFI/CFII) designation or AMT experience or certifications.
• Prior experience in a Part 141 or Part 135 safety-related role
• Formal training in Aviation accident investigation (e.g., NTSB or SCSI)
• Ability to interpret technical maintenance manuals for both airplanes and helicopters
• Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation
• Associate/Certified Safety Professional (A/CSP) designation
