Academic Advisor for College of Engineering, Computing, Technology, and Mathematics
This position requires a broad understanding of university and college policies and procedures. Many responsibilities involve regular collaboration with prospective and current students, faculty, staff, and student support services. The role requires a high degree of independent judgment in areas such as student advisement, referrals, record management, registration, and compliance with university requirements.

Examples of Duties

• Promote an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, supported, and respected.

• Establish a unique relationship with each student that focuses on interests, abilities, and values that facilitate self-awareness and decision-making during the undergraduate experience.

• Assist students in developing an educational plan regarding their academic pursuit.

• Assist students in understanding their degree requirements, the registration process, and additional academic processes and policies.

• Understanding of the degree requirements, prerequisites, corequisites and course sequencing of degree programs.

• Solid working knowledge of the University Core Curriculum requirements and how it is tailored to the specific degree programs.

• Supportive referral of students to appropriate campus offices and support resources.

• Utilize Degree Works, Student Educational Planner (SEP), and other technology to monitor and track student progress towards degree, including University Core Curriculum, Major, and Degree Requirements.

• Teach students how to use Degree Works as a degree audit tool to track progress toward a degree and how to perform "what-if" scenarios to explore other degree options.

• Completely utilize student information systems: including but not limited to viewing and interpreting/evaluating student records, analyzing test scores and pre-requisite requirements for course placement, submitting petition requests for course substitutions, processing course overrides, completing registration forms, assisting students with course registration and navigating holds on their account, monitoring academic success progress, and run registration reports.

• Utilize appropriate technology, including Slate and Outlook platforms, to communicate with students, document student interactions, promote awareness of important deadlines, and encourage students to schedule and attend regular advisement appointments.

• As needed, work events include but are not limited to New Student Orientation, Open House, and occasional events in the evenings and weekends.

• Thorough knowledge and compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

• Adhere to compliance and mandatory training requirements.

• Participate in all professional development programs, meetings, and trainings.

• Understand transfer course processing and articulation operations

• Thorough knowledge and focus on Student Success and Retention while collaborating with constituents

• Perform other tasks as needed and/or assigned to enhance services of Academic

Advisement, student success, and support institutional mission.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Customer services and/or professional skills regarding interpersonal workings
• Attention to detail
• Experience working effectively both independently and in collaborative groups

• Master’s degree and/or Academic advisor certification
• Experience in a postsecondary environment (academic advising, mentoring, counseling, teaching undergraduate) or high school teaching
• Experience working with students from underrepresented backgrounds
• Involvement in professional development activities and organizations such as NACADA and/or demonstrated commitment to continuous growth and improvement.
