Summary

This position is located in the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland, MD, National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), in the Smithsonian Institution (SI). The incumbent is primarily responsible for participating in and contributing to all aspects of the management and care of NMAI collections.

Duties And Responsibilities Include:

  • Determines the storage of artifacts by analyzing storage requirements. Advises on storage plans, and approaches. Designs innovative storage systems, plans and rearranges storages space, identifying storage furniture requirements and locating storage areas. Handles the movement of artifacts within NMAI facilities and to external organizations.
  • Monitors environmental conditions of the collections storage areas, which includes the integrated pest (IPM) program at NMAI storage locations.
  • Directs and coordinates museum technicians and specialists, interns, visitors, researchers and contractors in the collections areas and their work with the collections.
  • Assists in purchasing, tracking and maintaining equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, are not required to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

For This Position, Specialized Experience Is Defined As:

GS-11: Utilizing museum collections management principles and practices; monitoring museum environmental conditions; coordinating and facilitating internal and external access and use of collections; and experience working with supplies and equipment needed to care for and handle museum collections.

Special Instructions for Foreign Education: If you are qualifying by education and/or you have education completed in a foreign college/university described above, it is your responsibility to provide transcripts and proof of U.S. accreditation for foreign study. You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your Application Will Be Evaluated First For The Basic Qualifications Described Above. The Applications That Meet The Basic Qualifications Will Be Evaluated Further Against The Following Criteria:

  • Knowledge of the proper storage support making techniques for 3D objects as well as archival materials appropriate to museum collections.
  • Knowledge of artifact management practices and methodology.
  • Ability to take full management responsibilities for portions of 800,000 objects and acquisitions in the NMAI collection.
  • Skill in handling, movement, transporting, shipping, receiving, packing, unpacking, internal movement and storing of museum collections.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.

Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.

Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
