Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Aerospace Sciences Institute invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Aerospace position. The successful candidate will support undergraduate aerospace programs through classroom and simulator instruction, student mentoring, curriculum development, assessment, and departmental service. This position reports to the Professional Pilot Chair within the Aerospace Sciences Institute.

SUMMARY

Provide classroom and simulator instruction in support of Aerospace Sciences Institute academic programs. Responsible for course development and delivery, student assessment, academic advising, curriculum improvement, student recruitment and retention activities, and participation in departmental, university, and industry initiatives. Ensure compliance with university and accreditation requirements, support departmental assessment activities, promote aviation safety, and contribute to the continued growth and success of the Aerospace Sciences Institute.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Teach undergraduate aerospace and aviation courses in classroom and flight simulator environments as assigned. Courses may include professional flight operations, aircraft systems, aerodynamics, aviation safety, crew resource management, meteorology, and related disciplines.
• Develop syllabi, lesson plans, instructional materials, assignments, examinations, and other course resources consistent with departmental, university, and accreditation requirements.
• Evaluate student performance and provide timely, accurate, and constructive feedback regarding academic progress and achievement.
• Maintain regular office hours and provide academic advising, mentoring, and career guidance to students pursuing aviation-related professions.
• Participate in curriculum review, revision, and continuous improvement activities to enhance program effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
• Support departmental assessment initiatives and assist in collecting and maintaining documentation related to academic outcomes and accreditation requirements, including AABI compliance activities.
• Participate in student recruitment, retention, outreach, and promotional activities supporting the Aerospace Sciences Institute.
• Attend department meetings, faculty meetings, committee assignments, and university service activities as required.
• Promote and support the Aerospace Sciences Institute Safety Management System (SMS) and foster a culture of safety throughout all instructional activities.
• Represent Southeastern Oklahoma State University at aviation industry meetings, professional organizations, conferences, and events related to aviation education and pilot hiring standards.
• Maintain professional currency and expertise in aviation practices, regulations, technologies, and instructional methodologies.
• Perform other duties and special assignments as directed by departmental leadership.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of five years of professional pilot experience in turbine-powered aircraft.
• Demonstrated knowledge of aerospace sciences and the ability to effectively teach and communicate aviation concepts to undergraduate students.
• Strong written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and instructional skills.
• Commitment to student success, academic excellence, and aviation safety.

PREFERRED:

• Master’s degree in aviation, aerospace, aeronautics, education, safety, management, or a closely related field.
• Boeing 737 type rating and related flight experience.
• Prior college-level teaching, curriculum development, instructional evaluation, or aviation training experience.
• Experience teaching in a flight simulation environment.
• Demonstrated expertise in multiple aviation disciplines including professional flight operations, turbine aircraft systems, aerodynamics, aviation safety, and aviation management.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Southeastern Oklahoma State University, founded in 1909 as a teacher college, continues the strong tradition of producing outstanding educators for southeast Oklahoma and north Texas.
