Summary

The Library Assistant supports the daily operations of the library by assisting with the circulation of materials, organizing library resources, and helping patrons access library services. This role includes sorting, shelving, and processing library materials, providing basic customer service, presenting library programs and supporting public use of technology. The position requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and a willingness to work collaboratively with both staff and the public. The Library Assistant ensures a positive experience for all library users and contributes to the welcoming environment of the library.

 

Essential Functions

  • Issue library cards, check out and check in materials, and update borrower records.
  • Inspect returned materials for damage and handle accordingly.
  • Sort and shelve materials by classification code; return items to proper storage or display areas.
  • Assist patrons with the public access catalog, online services, copying, and faxing.
  • Answer routine inquiries and refer complex questions to professional library staff.
  • Create handouts and instructional materials for library use.
  • Assist in the design and setup of displays or exhibits.
  • Handle interlibrary loan requests and transport materials from book drops.
  • Answer phone calls and provide accurate information.
  • Maintain a positive and courteous attitude with patrons and coworkers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic understanding of library organization and classification systems.
  • Effective verbal communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic mathematical ability for handling checkouts, fines, and records.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Competency with computer systems, including Microsoft Office and library software.
  • Ethical reasoning and decision-making skills.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing procedures

Bookmobile Responsibilities:

  • This position primarily serves students on the bookmobile and assists with some programs. Children often come on in groups from school, quickly check out their books, and head back — it’s a fairly fast-paced environment with lots of interaction with kids throughout the day.

  • Basic computer skills are necessary, staff will need to check materials in and out efficiently using our system.

Requirements

  • Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience:
    Six months to one year of related experience or training preferred; equivalent combinations of education and experience considered.
  • Certifications:
    Willingness to attend necessary SEOLS trainings.

 

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work is performed in a public setting with frequent interaction and occasional interruptions.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • May involve restocking supplies, cleaning, and moving library materials or equipment.
  • Must be able to travel locally for meetings, trainings, and outreach activities.
