Assistant Professor

Communication Disorders

Full time; Tenure Track

Duties and Responsibilities: The typical teaching load will be 12 hours instructional/supervisory load per semester. Expertise in anatomy and physiology of speech, voice/resonance, craniofacial anomalies, pediatric dysphagia, or research is desirable; however, applicants with expertise in any area represented in the scope of practice within the field of communication sciences and disorders will be considered. In addition, the faculty member is required to provide clinical supervision as well as thesis and graduate research supervision as part of the teaching load. There may be additional opportunities for teaching or clinical supervision during the summer semester.

  • Teach graduate or undergraduate courses based on departmental need, interests, and areas of expertise
  • Research and service are also expected at the rank of assistant professor per the department guidelines for promotion and tenure
  • Engage in professional development and teaching enhancement activities; provide departmental, college, and university service including advising; and engage in scholarly activity
  • Engage in scholarly or service activities beyond the university setting is encouraged as part of the professional portfolio
  • Recruitment and retention of students

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate (EdD, PhD) or ABD (completion by August 1, 2026) in Communication Sciences and Disorders or related field; Degrees must be from a regionally accredited, internationally accredited, or government-certified university
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Current active Missouri SLP license or eligibility for Missouri licensure
  • Potential to develop or continue an established line of scholarship; commitment to the student-scholar model
  • Ability to teach or provide clinical supervision experience; teaching experience in anatomy and physiology of speech, voice/resonance, craniofacial anomalies, pediatric dysphagia, or research a plus
  • Experience with educational technology programs [Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas), Microsoft Office Suite, Nearpod or other pedagogy technologies, etc.]
  • Record of service activity in professional organizations or university committees
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff
  • Strong interpersonal, written, electronic, and oral communication skills
  • Clinical experience in any of the following areas: anatomy and physiology of speech, voice/resonance, craniofacial anomalies, pediatric dysphagia, or research; Other areas of clinical experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality in the workplace

Additional Information

Departmental Information: The Department of Communication Disorders includes 7 full-time faculty members serving both undergraduate and graduate students. The graduate program is accredited by the CAA. The department website may be accessed at: http://www.semo.edu/commdisorders/

The Center for Speech and Hearing is associated with the department's programs and is located adjacent to the Department of Communication Disorders offices. The Center for Speech and Hearing Clinic Coordinator holds a faculty appointment and reports to the chairperson.

The Department of Communication Disorders is housed within the College of Education, Health and Human Studies. In addition to the Department of Communication Disorders, the departments within the college are, Allied Health, Kinesiology, and Sport Sciences; Child and Family Studies; Elementary, Early and Special Education; Leadership, Middle and Secondary Education; Nursing; and Psychology and Counseling. The college also includes a number of centers and auxiliaries including the University Autism Center, the EDvolution Center, and the University School for Young Children.
