The Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) is hiring for a temporary, part-time Technical Services Assistant to process and repair library materials and provide exceptional customer service over the phone. Headquartered in Iola, SEKLS is one of seven regional library systems in Kansas that works public, academic, special, and school libraries in a 15-county area. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. This 25-hr. per week position is temporary through the end of 2026, with extension possible due to an upcoming reorganization. Essential Functions

1. Process new library materials belonging to SEKLS and member libraries for shelving and use with care and attention to detail. Apply appropriate covering, stamping, and labeling.

2. Answer the telephone and direct calls. Serve as primary backup to the Business Manager.

3. Mend library materials in need of repair, using the appropriate tools and techniques, including books and AV materials for their continued use.

4. Process and discard items selected for withdrawal. Keep accurate records for annual statistics.

5. Laminate and process materials sent by member libraries.

6. Assist in maintenance of the SEKnFind database as assigned by the department head.

Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted or changed at any time. Scheduling and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent, some college preferred

2. Excellent customer service skills

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to perform highly detailed and repetitive tasks
  • Ability to work precisely to wrap books with mylar and apply laminate coverings
  • Ability to use Google Workspace
  • Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and pleasantly with others
  • Ability to take direction from others
  • Ability to navigate changing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Use of or understanding of libraries
  • Ability to separate personal and professional ethics

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, reach, balance, and sit.
  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear; use hands to operate objects, tools, and controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.”
  • Ability to lift and carry, including boxes of books and other library materials, weighing up to 30 lbs. Unloads and delivers materials from one area to another.
  • Ability to navigate stairs.
  • Ability to view a computer monitor and/or operate a keyboard for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to operate computers with high proficiency using word processing, spreadsheets, Google suite, and the Internet.

All Southeast Kansas Library System employees may be called upon to assist other departments as needed.

90 days after hire and yearly evaluations are conducted by the Head of Technical Services/Cataloging.
