General Description of Position
TRIO Upward Bound is a federally funded college preparatory program supporting high school students who would be the first person in their family to attend college (“first generation”) and/or come from a household meeting federal income guidelines. It provides free academic tutoring, mentoring, counseling, and summer workshops to increase college enrollment and graduation rates. The program aims to build essential skills for success in post-secondary education.
Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of the TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program, the Mentor is responsible for helping to supervise and support high school students (rising 9 – 12 graders) as they develop academic and social skills during the UB Summer Program.

This is a part-time, temporary position. Scheduled dates for the 2026 summer program are May 26 – July 2, 2026, including a 4-day out-of-state trip. The Mentor’s hours during summer programming will be scheduled May 26 – June 26, Mondays – Fridays, based on a rotation between the hours of 7:30 am – 4:00 pm, and include a paid lunch on site. Tentative dates for the summer trip are June 29 – July 2, with all travel, hotel, 3 daily meals, and necessary admissions (museum visits, etc.) paid.
The contracted rate for the 6-week summer program is $3,150.
Essential Functions
- Provide supervision and guidance to high school students during class time, group activities, community service, college visits, and out-of-state trips by helping guide good academic and social habits and redirecting unacceptable behaviors when necessary. Promote respect and kindness between students.
- Work independently with and be responsible for an assigned group of students during “Team Time,” Community Service, college visits, and during the summer trip.
- On a rotating basis, drive an SCC 12-passenger van to transport students between Southern High School / Fairbury High School to the SCC Beatrice campus before and after the daily program.
- Drive a 12-passenger van to transport students to local community service sites and to college visits at various locations.
- Assist instructors, including but not limited to classroom activities, supervision, redirection of behavior, and constructive feedback to students.
- Assist Upward Bound staff with activities such as taking class attendance, taking pictures, creating a summer memory book, leading activities and projects, making copies, and making classroom deliveries to instructors.
- Serve as a responsible role model for high school students.
- Maintain consistent and clear communication with Upward Bound staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ensure your assigned van has an adequate amount of gas and is clean and free of trash. Vans are fueled on campus at the Physical Plant.
- Ensure your attire aligns with the dress code provided in the UB summer handbook.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to drive a 12-passenger van in town and on the highway.
- Ability to travel on a 4-day, 3-night out-of-state trip that includes ground (bus) and air transportation (travel, lodging, and meal expenses are paid).
- Ability to form positive relationships with youth from a variety of backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to use basic computer skills.
- Ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds for short distances and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
- The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of at least 24 credits from a post-secondary institution in education, social sciences, or a directly related field.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle, and the ability to qualify for auto insurance.
Desired Qualifications
- Classroom or other related experience working with high school students preferred.
