Ice Maintenance Specialist

(Full Time, Non-Exempt)

Hiring Range is $42,065- $49,708 annually based on qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Facility Maintenance Lead - Ice, this position is responsible for providing/maintaining quality ice conditions and maintenance of the ice rink surfaces and surrounding facilities (Zamboni garages, walkways, glass, boards, etc.) while keeping events on time according to the ice events schedule. This position also has opening and/or closing responsibilities. Performs duties in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.

 

Essential Duties:

  • Responsible for ice maintenance including resurfacing, edging, flooding, filling holes, chipping ice along dasher boards, and maintaining proper ice thickness as required by usage.
  • Operates mechanical equipment including but not limited to ice resurfacer, ice edger, etc.
  • Monitors ice chiller system including filling logs, adding oil to compressors, adding brine when needed, testing brine solution levels, and evaluating ice plant.
  • Maintains ice resurfacing machines including appearance, changing blades, greasing parts, battery upkeep, and changing oil (edger).
  • Responsible for cleaning up and changing broken glass. Maintains and repairs hockey nets.
  • Maintains and repairs dasher system and glass.
  • Responsible for identifying and performing routine and preventative maintenance needs through inspecting and proceeding to clean, lubricate, tighten, adjust, and replace worn or damaged parts of equipment.
  • Cleans rink boards, glass and players benches as needed.
  • Performs ice arena upkeep including cleaning locker rooms, bathrooms, players benches, and flooring, taking out trash, and resurfacing garages.
  • May provide direction to part-time staff, contractors and/or volunteers as assigned.
  • Ensures security of facility during all shifts by following opening and closing security procedures.
  • Responsible for performing ice cuts on time and when scheduled in order to keep ice events on schedule.
  • Provides backup support as needed to cover for absent employees and to ensure operations continue smoothly.
  • Informs supervisor of identified specialized maintenance needs.
  • Responds tactfully, respectfully and in a timely manner to inquiries, concerns and problems in person, through email, phone and mail by providing helpful information and explanations in-line with District policies and procedures. Thoughtfully handles confrontational or stressful interactions.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with District employees, vendors, and various outside user groups and associations.
  • Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.
  • Must work varied hours that may include evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Monitors, reads, and records ice floor and ice surface temperature, air temperature, humidity levels, compressors and other ice plant performance metrics and service records.
  • Observes necessary precautions to assure general public safety; inspects ice conditions for safety and maintenance needs.
  • Recognizes emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administers first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience working in facility ice operations and/or maintenance. One (1) year of experience preferred.
  • Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered.

 

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • CPR, AED and First Aid certifications or the ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Mandatory Reporting certification, or the ability to obtain within 30 days.
  • A valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record preferred.

 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of the techniques and equipment involved in custodial maintenance, preventative maintenance and the operations of an ice rink.  Equipment includes but is not limited to the Zamboni machines, ice edger, ice compressors, cooling towers and boiler units. 
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to provide outstanding customer service, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and interact with others in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule which may include some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must exercise accepted safety precautions while operating all equipment.   

 

Material and Equipment Used:

  • Regularly uses Zamboni, ice chipper, power washer, and edger.
  • Uses standard office equipment including a personal computer, phone, printer, and copier.
  • This position may be required to drive a personal and/or District motor vehicle to various District and off-site facilities for business purposes.

 

 

Working Environment:

  • The employee is exposed to wet, cold and slippery conditions.
  • This position works in a cool environment; the temperature at the ice rink(s) will vary from 40-55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Also performs work in an office environment subject to interruptions and background noise.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent bending, standing, skating, walking, kneeling, stooping, reaching and lifting in performance of duties.
  • Occasional work lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate equipment, personal computer, and office equipment.
  • Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Vision acuity to see close-up and at a distance with the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. Vision requirements also include depth perception and color vision.
  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain clear and effective communication via the telephone and through face-to-face communication. Must understand and be understood.
