The Office of Admissions at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is excited to announce a career opportunity for an Admissions Counselor. This role is key in helping the University achieve its enrollment goals through undergraduate admissions recruitment programs. The Admissions Counselor position is multidimensional, providing timely customer service to prospective students regarding varied topics related to college exploration while simultaneously supporting the various college and university enrollment goals. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
The Admissions department at SDSU serves as the primary gateway for prospective students facilitating a smooth and transparent application and enrollment process. The department engages in active recruitment and outreach efforts while collaborating closely with academic departments, financial aid and other administrative units to ensure a seamless experience for prospective and admitted students.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Professionally represent SDSU at college fairs, high school visits, and other off-campus programs through positive interactions with perspective students and campus partners.
- Meet with and advise prospective students and families that visit SDSU regarding campus benefits and services available.
- Successfully manage assigned territories and implement undergraduate admissions recruitment programs to meet enrollment goals of the university.
- Establish an effective communication program for students in assigned territories.
- Determine admission status of freshman students.
- Establish personal written communications projects for prospective students.
- Respond to incoming inquiries for information through phone, department email account, and web chat.
- Assist with orientation/early registration as needed.
- Complete assigned project planning guides.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Participate in professional service as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned Bachelor’s degree by first date of employment
- The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adjust priorities based on changing circumstances without compromising quality.
- Exceptional telephone skills
- Experience working in a customer facing professional role within a team-based office environment.
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal and electronic communication skills
- A willingness to travel extensively and work flexible hours
- Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of start date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with personal schedule management – setting priorities and meeting deadlines without external oversight.
- Experience working in a fast paced, team environment
- Knowledge of SDSU, South Dakota or the Midwest;
- Experience working in student affairs and/or active participation in student organizations, campus life events, orientation, etc.
