Pharmacy Technician/ Medical Assistant

General Summary:

The Certified Pharmacy Technician/ Medical Assistant is a cross-functional team member who supports both clinical and pharmacy operations in an ambulatory, community-focused care setting. This position performs a combination of patient care, administrative, and pharmacy-related duties under the direction of licensed providers and pharmacists. This role is essential in ensuring efficient workflow and accurate, timely delivery of both medical and pharmaceutical services while maintaining compliance with all applicable regulations and organizational policies.

Employment Status: Hourly – FSLA Non-Exempt Status

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Pharmacy Technician Functions:

• Prepare and label medications for pharmacist verification.
• Assist in dispensing medications under pharmacist supervision.
• Provide patient support regarding clear medication instructions, potential side effects, storage as allowed by state board of pharmacy laws.
• Assist patients with insurance queries, medication costs, and any other pharmacy-related concerns.
• Manage pharmacy inventory, including ordering, stocking, and monitoring controlled substances.
• Maintain accurate prescription records, billing, and insurance processing.
• Support compliance with pharmacy regulations, including Georgia Board of Pharmacy, 340B drug pricing program, DEA, and HRSA requirements.
• Participate in regular audits and inspections to ensure the clinic’s pharmacy remains in compliance.

Medical Assistant Functions:

• Accurately interview patients, record medical history, and measure vital signs (height, weight, BMI, pulse oximetry, etc.).
• Prepare patients for examinations and assist providers during exams and procedures.
• Administer medications and injections as ordered by the provider.
• Perform and document CLIA-waived lab tests (e.g., urine dip, pregnancy tests, glucose, rapid flu/strep).
• Collect, prepare, and document specimens (blood, urine, stool, sputum).
• Prepare exam rooms, maintain equipment, and assist with instrument sterilization.
• Prepare charts according to provider schedules and ensure accurate documentation in EMR.
• Provide follow-up instructions as directed.

Primary Accountabilities:

• Maintain accurate, timely documentation with clinical and pharmacy systems.
• Assist in preparing and submitting reports required by the FQHC and regulatory bodies.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, regulatory standards, and organizational policies.
• Collaborate with providers, pharmacists, nurses, and administrative staff to coordinate patient care.
• Participate in team meetings, huddles, training, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide excellent customer service to patients and families.
• Float between clinical and pharmacy areas and work at other locations as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including front office support when necessary.

Typical Working Conditions:

• Frequent contact with staff, patients, and the public.
• Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer in a normal office environment.
• Work may be stressful at times and may require occasional evening or weekend work.

This position has access to systems and/or services that contain protected health information (PHI) as defined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. Additionally, the position ensures and adheres to strict confidentiality when handling patient information, according to the HIPAA Privacy Act and supports GAPHC policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Graduate of an accredited medical assistant program.
• Must hold current medical assistant certification.
• Must hold current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification in Georgia.
• At least 2 years of clinical and/or pharmacy setting experience in an outpatient/ambulatory setting preferred.
• BLS certification required.
• Georgia Driver’s License with a clean MVR.
• Knowledge of medical procedures, which relates to patient education and health practice, and pharmacy laws and regulations.
• Excellent communication, organizational and customer service skills.
• Excellent phone etiquette.
