Role Overview

A global life sciences organisation is seeking a Principal Cloud Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain modern healthcare-focused applications supporting clinical, research, and enterprise R&D initiatives.

This role will lead the development of secure, scalable, AI-enabled web applications and APIs within an AWS cloud environment, combining strong software engineering expertise with product development, user experience, and intelligent application capabilities.

The position will work closely with Product, AI/ML, Data Engineering, IT Infrastructure, and business teams to deliver secure and reliable software solutions for healthcare and research use cases.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack web applications using Python, Java, C , and modern frontend frameworks.
  • Build scalable backend services and REST APIs using Python frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
  • Develop responsive, intuitive, and secure user interfaces using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, and Tailwind.
  • Build applications supporting clinical, research, operational, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • Collaborate with Product, AI/ML, Data Engineering, IT, Infrastructure, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into effective software solutions.
  • Design and implement application features incorporating AI and machine learning capabilities.
  • Integrate AI services and machine learning models into production applications through APIs and service interfaces.
  • Work with AI/ML teams to support model inference, prompt-based experiences, and AI-powered healthcare workflows.
  • Develop secure and scalable cloud-native components within AWS, using services such as EC2, Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, S3, CloudFront, CloudWatch, and IAM.
  • Implement authentication, authorisation, role-based access controls, and secure data handling practices appropriate for regulated healthcare environments.
  • Develop integrations with internal and external systems using APIs, event-driven architectures, and secure service communication.
  • Create and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end testing frameworks.
  • Support CI/CD and modern software delivery practices using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or AWS CodePipeline.
  • Contribute to application monitoring, logging, troubleshooting, performance optimisation, and system reliability.
  • Participate in architecture and design reviews, providing technical input on scalability, security, application structure, and AI integration.
  • Document technical designs, application behaviour, operational procedures, and system requirements.
  • Ensure solutions align with healthcare privacy, security, and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, GDPR, and applicable GxP practices.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering standards, code quality, and technical best practices.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong proficiency in Python, Java, and C with experience developing enterprise or healthcare software applications.
  • Strong experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.
  • Experience designing and developing REST APIs and backend services.
  • Strong knowledge of AWS services used for application development and deployment.
  • Experience building secure, scalable web applications in cloud environments.
  • Strong understanding of authentication, authorisation, and secure application design patterns.
  • Experience with unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience integrating third-party services, APIs, and internal systems.
  • Experience developing applications incorporating AI/ML capabilities or intelligent workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML application patterns including model inference, LLM integration, prompt-driven experiences, search and retrieval, summarisation, or recommendation capabilities.
  • Experience collaborating with Data Science or ML teams to productionise AI-driven application features.
  • Knowledge of healthcare privacy, security, and regulatory requirements, including HIPAA and GDPR.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder collaboration abilities.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience within healthcare, life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, clinical research, or medical device environments.
  • Experience developing AI-enabled healthcare applications, clinical decision-support tools, or intelligent workflow solutions.
  • Experience with event-driven or service-oriented application architectures.
  • Knowledge of software architecture patterns and enterprise integration practices.
  • Familiarity with regulated software development, validation, documentation, and change-control processes.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Data Science, Bioinformatics, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 3 years of experience designing and deploying cloud-native applications within AWS environments.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex software projects from initial design through production support.

Work Environment

The role involves primarily computer-based work, including extended periods of sitting and regular use of standard office and technology equipment.
