Senior Principal Controls Engineer
An industry leading healthcare manufacturing organization is seeking a high level engineering leader to join their facility in Asheville, North Carolina. In this leadership capacity, you will oversee a dedicated team of three to five controls engineers while providing high level technical support for plant operations. The role involves a mix of strategic planning and hands on troubleshooting. Key responsibilities include analyzing manufacturing capacity, driving process automation and optimization, and leading validation activities using lean manufacturing methodologies.
Core Responsibilities
Supervise and mentor the controls engineering team and maintenance technicians.
Manage capital budgets and lead large scale engineering projects from design to startup.
Conduct detailed engineering studies on new equipment to define operating parameters.
Lead root cause investigations and execute change control tasks.
Develop and implement validation protocols and operating instructions.
Drive continuous improvement and cost reduction initiatives across the facility.
Act as a subject matter expert for equipment troubleshooting and process resolution.
Collaborate with cross functional teams to ensure regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
Technical Requirements
Extensive experience with Allen Bradley Control Logix, AB500, and Safety PLCs.
Proficiency with HMI systems and communication protocols including TCP IP, RS 232, Profibus, and Fieldbus.
Strong electrical diagnostic skills with the ability to read and create schematics using AutoCAD or E Plan.
Familiarity with motion control, servo drives, VFDs, and hydraulic systems.
Experience with robotics platforms such as Fanuc, Yaskawa, or Staubli.
Knowledge of vision systems like Cognex or Keyence.
Programming skills in C sharp, C plus plus, or SQL are considered a strong plus.
Candidate Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with a preference for Electrical, Mechanical, or Mechatronics disciplines.
Minimum of eight years of experience in a professional engineering environment.
Proven expertise in Rockwell PLC systems and servo control systems.
Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with CAD software.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects and manage technical personnel.
Compensation and Benefits
The annual base salary range for this position is 128,000 to 176,000 dollars, depending on experience and qualifications.
