The Environmental Health & Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role is key to fostering a culture of safety, sustainability, and operational excellence at Sorenson Engineering.
Level III
Responsible for implementing and supporting environmental and safety compliance programs, conducting risk assessments, and coordinating safety training under the guidance of senior management. This role emphasizes technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and cross-departmental collaboration.
Level IV
Leads the strategic development and management of the company’s EHS programs. This role includes oversight of regulatory compliance, cross-functional coordination, team leadership, and driving a culture of continuous safety improvement.
Essential Job Functions
Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations including air, water, and hazardous waste.
- Manage environmental projects (e.g., stormwater, air quality, hazardous materials).
- Lead sustainability initiatives, such as energy efficiency, recycling, and waste reduction programs.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments and ensure accurate reporting to regulatory agencies (EPA, DTSC, CUPA/CERS, etc.).
Safety Management
- Develop, implement, and maintain safety policies, programs/committee, and procedures.
- Perform risk assessments, site inspections, and audits to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis; track corrective actions to closure.
- Manage OSHA compliance, including recordkeeping, reporting, and employee training programs.
Training & Leadership
- Lead employee safety training initiatives (e.g., PPE use, HAZCOM, lockout/tagout).
- Serve as chairperson of the Safety Committee.
- Foster a culture of proactive safety behavior through continuous communication and coaching.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain SDS program and documentation for chemical management.
- Prepare and submit reports for various environmental and required safety projects.
- Maintain records of safety incidents, environmental inspections, and training activities.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Partner with HR, Facilities, Engineering, and Operations teams on compliance and workplace safety improvements.
- Coordinate with emergency services and lead emergency preparedness planning.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, Cal/OSHA, and other regulatory bodies.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management systems (SMS/EHS platforms).
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent.
- Experience in ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 environments.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety, or related field.
• 3–5 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing/industrial setting.
• Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and Cal/OSHA standards.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
• Certification preferred: CSP, CIH, or equivalent (in progress or completed).
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Physical Demands
Must be able to periodically walk to other areas of the plant, must have good eyesight and hand dexterity, and be able to identify and distinguish colors.
Work Environment
Within safety guidelines, there will be exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, oils/solvents, fumes, and odors that may affect the eyes, ears, nose, throat and/or skin.
