Sorenson Engineering is seeking an experienced precision tool grinder. Experienced in cutting and sharpening tools and demonstrates troubleshooting skills and techniques.

Summary:

Engineering position responsible for engaging with new customer challenges by ensuring innovative, quality cutting tools are available to the manufacturing operations in a timely manner that provides extraordinary performance.

Level I

Entry-level engineering position. Supports manufacturing operations through one or more of the following:

  • Design job-specific cutting tools based on established cutting tool geometries.
  • Fabricates basic cutting tool geometries.
  • Supports production on CNC tool grinding equipment by monitoring machine operation and inspecting tools produced.
  • Procures cutting tools through approved suppliers as required and ensures production operations receive tools in a timely manner.

Level II

Intermediate-level engineering position. Utilizes previous engineering experience to support one or more of the following:

·         Designs job-specific cutting tools with new cutting tool geometries, seeking to optimize cost vs. performance.

·         Fabricates intermediate to advanced cutting tool geometries.

·         Manages all production and support processes on CNC tool grinding equipment.

·         Identifies and qualifies potential new tool and material suppliers to ensure timely delivery of quality tools and materials.

Level III

Experienced-level engineering position. Exploits engineering experience to advance SE’s cutting tool capabilities in multiple facets of cutting tool engineering:

·   Optimizes the design of cutting tools for advanced machining processes.

·   Optimizes the cutting tool fabrication process to allow for new fabrication processes.

·  Optimizes production processes on CNC tool grinding equipment.

·  Collaborates with outside suppliers to identify new technology and design innovations in the area of cutting tool design.

Takes responsibility for supporting a broad spectrum of production operations by seeking to optimize all aspects of cutting tool design, fabrication, and sourcing.

 

Essential Job Functions:

    • Effectively communicates to SE leadership regarding the status of current objectives through both oral and written modes.
    • Effectively communicates and collaborates with technical and operational staff to achieve current objectives. 
    • Provides engineering support to manufacturing operations to assist in problem-solving.
    • Documents new process standards and seeks to improve existing processes.
    • Utilizes knowledge of engineering principles and material properties to support current objectives.
    • Utilizes effective time-management techniques to meet daily objectives.
    • Observes safety policies including personal protective equipment requirements and hazardous/emergency procedures.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • Provides daily engineering report.
    • Special Assignments as requested by supervisor.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Able to interpret instructions both written and oral.  Able to work in a team with co-workers to resolve work issues. Advanced level math with knowledge of measuring techniques and the ability to work with micromachining tolerances (example: ± 0.0002). Able to communicate effectively in English.

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma. Previous work experience in tool grinding preferred.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to stand long periods of time, occasionally exert push force up to 50 pounds, must have good eyesight and hand dexterity, and able to identify and distinguish colors.

Work Environment:
Will be exposed to noise, moving mechanical parts, oils/solvents, fumes, and odors that may affect the eyes, ears, nose, throat and/or skin.

In accordance with California law, the expected salary range for this California position is listed at the top of this posting. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
