Sonterra Municipal Utility District Recreation Specialist

Hourly Range: $22.00-$28.00 ($45,760 -$58,240 a year) depending on experience
Type of Position: Full-Time; FLSA non-exempt
Position Summary
The Recreation Specialist under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and General Manager at Sonterra Municipal Utility District will be responsible for aiding with the development, execution, and evaluation of programs and events for the Parks and Recreation Department within the guidelines of the Recreation budget and fiscal goals of the district. This role requires a combination of management expertise, an awareness for training staff and a commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable recreation environment for Sonterra residents.
Organizational Relationships:
Reports to: Recreation Supervisor
Other: Works closely with General Manager, Recreation Manager, and other Parks Staff.
Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
- Responsible for aiding in planning, preparing, and executing special events for the district. This includes working closely with the public and district leadership.
- Responsible for many recreation programs including sports leagues, nature education, seasonal festivals, and summer camps. Includes setting up and taking down at multiple facilities in the Parks and Recreation Department.
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale, quality services, and innovation.
- Provides applicable training to employees utilizing safe work practices and working conditions.
- Provides supervision, support, guidance, and skill evaluation to recreation staff to ensure all facilities are operating efficiently.
- Maintain supplies, equipment, and materials in support of recreation programs.
- Reports to management regularly regarding program performance, attendance, and perception.
- Designs, develops, and delivers promotional program materials via social media, flyers, and brochures.
- Help identify trends and evaluate current programs to ensure a high degree of innovation and quality in service.
- Work in conditions that may involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions.
- Aid in preparing and delivering presentations using PowerPoint and other audio-visual equipment.
- Consolidates information and maintains necessary records; prepares manuals, documents, correspondence, and technical and comprehensive reports.
- Hires, trains, supervises, schedules, and evaluates assigned staff.
- Recruits, schedules, and books volunteer’s and vendors
- In conjunction with HR and the Recreation Supervisor, hires and evaluates performance of part time recreation and athletic staff.
- Promotes and schedules recreation facility rentals and staff. Plans programming and special events to promote and attract new users and memberships, meeting the evolving needs of the community through innovative program offerings.
- Participates in the development of the operating and capital improvement budgets, including justifications for needed equipment, estimates of materials for programs, facility repairs, upgrades, and operations and supplies.
- Orders supplies, conduct inventories, and maintain purchase records.
- Collects and prepares data for monthly and annual reporting.
- Performs all other duties as assigned and required.

- Knowledge of principles, policies, and practices of the Parks and Recreation Department.

- Exceptional communication skills; verbal, written, and computer and software proficiency.

Minimum Qualifications & Expérience
- Any combination demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the position effectively and successfully is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:
- Education: Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in recreation, social services, education recommended but not required.
- At least two years of experience in organized recreation programing or facility management.
- Supervisory or lead experience.
- PC literate, technology savvy
- Experience with online recreation software systems
- Valid, Texas driver’s license "or" if you currently have another state driver's license, must be willing and able to obtain a valid TX driver's license within 60 days (about 2 months) of hire.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, employees may be exposed to adverse weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, and wind.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and to frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate a computer, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.

Full time/40 hrs. weekly/Day shift/Some weekends and Holidays
On call may be required
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
