What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Technician (I–II) position at Somar Industries LTD?
Overview
Somar Industries is hiring a Maintenance Technician to join our team in El Paso, TX. This role keeps our production equipment and machinery running safely and reliably, supporting the team that keeps our stucco and dry-mix building materials plant up and running every day.
We hire at two experience levels, so whether you're building your maintenance skills or you're already working independently on mechanical repairs, we want to hear from you. Pay is based on your experience and demonstrated skill level.
What You'll Do
- Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment and machinery, and keep an updated record of maintenance checks
- Use hand-held power tools safely and correctly, including grinders, drills, and impact wrenches
- Perform basic welds and follow proper welding safety protocols
- Identify, document, and report equipment damage or issues to your supervisor
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and all applicable safety policies
- Conduct routine visual inspections of equipment and communicate findings clearly
- Keep the tool room clean and organized, and keep an up-to-date cleaning and maintenance schedule for all assigned machinery
- Complete a forklift pre- and post-use maintenance checklist daily if operating a forklift (only if certified)
What Matters Most to Us
Technical skill can be trained — these are the traits that make someone successful on our team:
- Reliability: You show up on time, follow through on your schedule, and get things done without needing to be chased down.
- Detail Orientation: You catch mistakes before they become bigger problems and keep accurate documentation and maintenance records.
- Ownership: You take responsibility when something goes wrong, speak up early, and follow through on what you say you'll do.
- Communication: You communicate clearly with coworkers and leadership, ask questions when something's unclear, and raise safety or equipment concerns right away.
- Willingness to Enforce Standards: You follow safety procedures every time and hold the line, even when it would be easier to cut corners.
- Attitude: You stay positive through challenges, support your teammates, and keep the drama out of the workplace.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or GED; vocational or technical training in a maintenance-related field is a plus
- Basic welding skills required — able to perform simple welds safely; we do not provide welding training for this role
- Level I: Basic maintenance skills described above
- Level II: 2-4 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment; comfortable using Microsoft Office or similar software for data entry and reporting
- OSHA 10 certification required for Level I; OSHA 30 certification required for Level II
- Certified Forklift License required
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Good communication skills and a safety-first mindset
- Ability to lift/move items and be active on your feet throughout the shift
