We are seeking a battle-tested Senior Welding Operations Engineer who has experience in high-duty-cycle production to lead the technical heart of our production line. This role is the critical link between advanced process development and 24/7 manufacturing execution.
The ideal candidate is a high-level technical leader who has direct production cell ownership experience and managed high-volume automated welding operations. You must be the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for arc welding technologies, capable of ensuring near 100% uptime while maintaining metallurgical perfection across miles of wire deposition. You are a leader who demonstrates by action, ready to fix a hardware failure hands-on while simultaneously mentoring the next generation of engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Must be a US Person according to FAR22 CFR 120.15 - US Person.
- Own the technical uptime and operational stability of 24/7 robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) cells. Lead the advanced development, qualification, and deep-level troubleshooting of Fronius Cold Metal Transfer power sources and robotic integrations.
- Apply deep mechanical and metallurgical expertise to ensure defect free production across high-duty-cycle production schedules.
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and the final technical authority for welding operations, providing decisive guidance to internal R&D teams and external customers.
- Design and execute rigorous experiments to validate the stability of weld parameters and material properties for continuous production environments.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including industrial-grade Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed for 24/7 shift operations.
- Directly troubleshoot and repair automated welding equipment, wire feeders, and torch systems; lead by example on the shop floor.
- Oversee complex destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure structural integrity of additive components.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians on welding best practices and safety.
Required Attributes & Skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and/or Certified Robotic Arc Welding (CRAW) and other certificates listed via American Welding Society (AWS)
- 8 – 10 years of relevant hands-on engineering experience with a significant portion dedicated to high-volume automated manufacturing.
- Expert-level proficiency with Fronius CMT (Cold Metal Transfer) technology, including deep-level hardware maintenance and parameter stabilization for long-duration runs.
- Mastery of arc welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, PAW) and physical metallurgy of complex alloy systems.
- Extensive experience integrating and operating high-duty-cycle welding systems with 6-axis industrial robotics.
- Able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and thrive in a high-intensity, hardware-heavy production environment.
- Exhibit a high degree of accuracy, technical rigor, and an uncompromising attention to detail.
- Proficient in verbal and written technical communications.
Advantageous Attributes & Skills:
- Direct experience in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) or Directed Energy Deposition (DED) at a production scale.
- International Weld Engineer (IWE) Certificate.
- Experience with the operation and programming of 6-axis industrial robots (Fanuc, ABB, etc) and positioners.
- Proficiency in programming software or slicers for AM toolpath generation (e.g., Mastercam, Siemens, etc.).
- Experience with mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue) and advanced metallographic analysis (sectioning, mounting, polishing, optical microscopy).
- Hands-on experience with manual welding, fabrication, and machining.
- Background in manual fabrication, machining, mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks).
