CNC Machinist – Custom Guitar Manufacturing / Part time

Soloway Guitars
Wilmington, NC Part Time
POSTED ON 7/6/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/3/2026

Job Overview

We build world-class jazz guitars that are played around the world and have been on stage at Carnegie Hall.

We combine precision CNC machining with exceptional hand craftsmanship to produce instruments known for their beauty, playability, and uncompromising quality.

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled CNC Operator / Craftsman / Technician specializing in wood manufacturing to join our team on a part-time basis. In this role, you will operate and maintain CNC machinery to produce high-quality contoured wood components, ensuring precision and efficiency throughout the production process.

This is not a production cabinet shop position. We manufacture premium custom guitar bodies featuring complex 3D contours, steam-bent tops, and precision machining. Successful candidates will be comfortable working with detailed toolpaths, maintaining tight tolerances, and producing high-quality guitar bodies ready for finishing.

The ideal candidate has experience creating and refining CNC toolpaths using RhinoCAM or Autodesk Fusion CAM. Experience with RhinoCAD or Fusion CAD is highly desirable. Other CAM / CAD software experience may be acceptable.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking flexible hours while contributing to the production of a world-class instrument.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret CAD files to ensure accurate machining processes.
  • Program toolpaths using CAM programming software to optimize production workflows.
  • Set up workholding and tooling for precision machining.
  • Verify first-article dimensions before production.
  • Optimize feeds, speeds, and toolpaths for surface quality.
  • Perform body assembly work (glue up, steam bending, glue down, pre-finish sanding). This assembly work is only for assembling the components of the body. It does not include downstream work such as final shaping, hard coat finishing, hardware installation, neck dressing or guitar setup.
  • Inspect guitar bodies for dimensional accuracy and fit and finish quality.
  • Continuously improve machining processes for quality and efficiency.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on CNC equipment.
  • Follow safety protocols and manufacturing standards diligently to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of machine settings, production data, and inspection results for traceability.

We're a small, quality-focused team where craftsmanship, continuous improvement, and attention to detail matter more than production volume. This position offers an engaging work environment where attention to detail meets craftsmanship.

If you enjoy solving machining challenges and take pride in creating exceptional work rather than simply producing parts, you'll feel at home here.
