Job Description – RN Med/Surg Travel

Department: GENERAL SURGERY INPATIENT
Schedule: 3x12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM, weekends and holidays as needed
Hours Per Week: 36
Position Summary
The Travel Med/Surg Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to adult surgical and medical-surgical patients in an inpatient setting. The RN is responsible for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure quality outcomes, patient safety, and exceptional patient satisfaction. This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Care Delivery
- Performs thorough, systematic, and accurate patient assessments across the lifespan from pediatric to geriatric populations.
- Delivers safe, evidence-based nursing care appropriate to patient condition and diagnosis.
- Monitors patient status and responds appropriately to changes in condition.
- Prioritizes patient care needs in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
- Demonstrates competency in emergency response procedures and use of emergency equipment.
Clinical Skills
- Provides direct patient care in accordance with established nursing standards and hospital policies.
- Demonstrates competency in medical-surgical nursing procedures and postoperative care.
- Administers medications, treatments, and interventions safely and accurately.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics and safe patient transfer techniques.
Surgical & Unit-Specific Responsibilities
- Demonstrates knowledge of surgical diagnoses, procedures, and perioperative equipment.
- Individualizes patient care according to surgical procedure and anesthesia type.
- Performs preoperative and postoperative assessments and patient education.
- Assesses patient understanding of procedures, discharge instructions, and care plans.
Documentation
- Maintains complete, accurate, and timely electronic medical record documentation.
- Documents nursing assessments, interventions, patient responses, and outcomes.
- Ensures compliance with documentation standards and regulatory guidelines.
- Accurately records patient education and discharge planning activities.
Patient Education & Family Support
- Educates patients and families regarding surgical procedures, treatments, medications, and recovery expectations.
- Encourages patient and family participation in care planning and decision-making.
- Assesses learning needs and adapts education methods accordingly.
Professionalism & Collaboration
- Demonstrates professionalism, accountability, and ethical nursing practice.
- Collaborates effectively with physicians, ancillary staff, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Identifies opportunities for professional development and clinical growth.
Safety & Compliance
- Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals and infection prevention standards.
- Utilizes two patient identifiers and follows Universal Protocol consistently.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
- Complies with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
PAT RN Responsibilities (if applicable)
- Supports timely completion of patient testing and pre-admission requirements.
- Reviews Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) orders for completeness and appropriateness.
- Identifies potential omissions based on surgery type, patient age, and medical condition.
Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required.
- Associate Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 1 year recent Medical/Surgical nursing experience required.
- Prior acute care or surgical inpatient experience preferred.
- Travel nursing experience preferred.
Licensure & Certifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Physical Requirements
- Must meet all physical requirements as defined by Occupational Safety/OMS standards.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and move patients/equipment as necessary throughout shift duration.
Schedule Requirements
- 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
- Weekend rotation required
- One summer and one winter holiday required as needed
- Flexible to unit staffing needs and patient census demands
Pay: $55.00 per hour
