What you’ll need to thrive:

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Experience interpreting in educational settings, particularly K-12 (preferred)
  • Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or eligibility to obtain necessary state credentials
  • Familiarity with Deaf culture and sensitivity to individual student needs
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers, specialists, and other interpreters
  • Professionalism, reliability, and the flexibility to adapt to dynamic classroom environments

Key responsibilities:

  • Interpret classroom instruction, school events, meetings, and activities for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Accurately convey spoken information into ASL and vice versa, ensuring full access to academic content
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all student matters
  • Adapt interpreting techniques to suit various subjects and student learning levels
  • Foster a positive and respectful classroom climate that supports student participation
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and support staff to align on goals and student progress
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as requested
