What are the responsibilities and job description for the Azure Data Architect position at Sogeti?
About the job:
The Data Architect will be responsible for designing, documenting, and communicating enterprise-grade data architecture solutions. The role requires a practitioner - not a generalist - with proven experience delivering complex, integrated data platforms on Azure. The candidate must be equally capable of operating in strategy discussions with executive stakeholders and in deep technical design sessions with engineering teams.
Core Technical Competencies:
Microsoft Azure Data Services – Required Expertise
- Azure Data Factory (ADF): pipeline authoring, trigger management, parameterization, and integration runtime configuration
- Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 (ADLS): hierarchical namespace, access control, and lifecycle management
- Azure SQL Database / Azure SQL Managed Instance: schema design, performance tuning, and hybrid connectivity
- Azure Purview / Microsoft Purview: data cataloging, data lineage, and governance policy enforcement
- Azure Event Hubs and Azure Service Bus: streaming ingestion and event-driven architecture
- Azure Key Vault, Azure Monitor, and Log Analytics: security, observability, and operational management
Databricks – Extensive Expertise Required
- Delta Lake architecture: ACID transactions, schema enforcement, time travel, and table optimization (OPTIMIZE / ZORDER / VACUUM)
- Databricks Unity Catalog: fine-grained governance, metastore configuration, and cross-workspace data sharing
- Medallion architecture design and implementation (Bronze / Silver / Gold layer patterns)
- Databricks Workflows and job orchestration with dependency management
- PySpark and Spark SQL development: large-scale data transformation, partitioning strategies, and performance tuning
- Databricks Asset Bundles (DABs) and CI/CD integration with Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions
- MLflow integration and feature engineering pipelines within the Databricks environment
Distributed & Hybrid Data Environments
- Architecture experience spanning cloud-native Azure services and on-premises SQL Server
- Centralized and decentralized data pattern design and governance
- Expertise in connectivity between on-prem environments and Azure via ExpressRoute, VPN Gateway, and self-hosted integration runtimes
- Understanding of distributed computing paradigms, data partitioning, and workload isolation strategies
Architecture & Documentation Capabilities:
Technical Documentation
- Demonstrated ability to produce comprehensive, audience-appropriate architecture documentation including solution design documents, data flow diagrams, data dictionaries, and API/endpoint specifications
- Proficiency authoring reference architecture and conceptual architecture documents that clearly delineate current-state vs. future-state environments
- Experience maintaining living architecture artifacts within collaboration platforms (Confluence, SharePoint, Azure DevOps Wiki)
Conceptual & Reference Architecture Diagrams
- The candidate must clearly articulate and document the distinction between conceptual architecture (business-aligned, technology-agnostic representation) and reference architecture (prescriptive, pattern-based technical guidance)
- Must be capable of producing a conceptual architecture diagram that incorporates all of the following layers in a single cohesive view:
- Data source systems (cloud, on-premises, SaaS, streaming)
- Integration patterns and middleware (ADF, Event Hubs, API Management)
- Network topology including VNets, subnets, private endpoints, and peering
- Cybersecurity controls: firewalls (Azure Firewall / third-party NVA), NSGs, DDoS protection, and private link services
- Identity and access management (Azure AD, Managed Identities, RBAC)
- Data platform layers (ingestion, processing, serving, consumption)
- Monitoring and observability plane
- Tooling proficiency in Visio, Lucidchart, draw.io, or equivalent enterprise diagramming platforms
Cloud Networking & Security Knowledge
- Thorough understanding of Azure Virtual Networks, Network Security Groups (NSGs), User-Defined Routes (UDRs), and private endpoint configuration
- Experience designing architectures that satisfy enterprise security requirements including data perimeter controls, egress filtering, and micro-segmentation
- Familiarity with Azure Firewall policies and hub-and-spoke network topology as applied to data platform environments
- Understanding of compliance and data residency requirements as they apply to regulated financial institutions
- Navigating hybrid connectivity requirements across cloud-native and on-premises endpoints with documented runbooks and integration catalogs
What you will bring (Preferred):
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) – Preferred
- 8 years of progressive data architecture experience with a minimum of 4 years in Azure cloud environments
- Prior experience in financial services, banking, or regulated industries preferred
- Demonstrated portfolio of architecture documentation deliverables available upon request
