Job Summary
The Software & Controls Engineer designs, implements, and supports building automation, energy management, and security systems that meet client scope, budget, and schedule. This mid-level role combines controls engineering, software development, and project delivery. The engineer develops controller and workstation software, integrates third‑party systems, creates operator graphics, and supports commissioning and training. The position collaborates closely with project managers, sales, and field teams to ensure reliable, efficient, and customer‑accepted systems across our Facilities Automation portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
System Design & Software Development
- Develop, load, and validate controller software, databases, and configuration for BAS/EMS/security systems.
- Design and configure system architectures and networks for workstations, servers, and field devices.
- Create intuitive graphical user interfaces (operator graphics/HMI) and dashboards for end users.
- Develop sequences of operation and implement energy‑saving control strategies.
- Integrate third‑party systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting, power monitoring, access control) using open protocols.
Project Engineering & Delivery
- Produce quotes, drawings, submittals, I/O summaries, operations manuals, and closeout/as‑built documentation.
- Plan and track scope, schedule, budget, materials, and subcontractors; proactively manage risks/issues.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines and external partners (GCs, MEP trades, vendors) to align deliverables.
- Support installation, start‑up, programming, and commissioning activities based on project complexity.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local codes; uphold company safety and quality standards.
Stakeholder Engagement & Support
- Provide technical support before, during, and after installation; resolve field issues and change requests.
- Deliver onsite and remote training for customers and internal teams; develop procedures and training materials.
- Communicate status, decisions, and trade‑offs to project stakeholders; contribute to proposals and solution design.
Continuous Improvement & Standards
- Apply value engineering and process improvements to enhance reliability, performance, and cost.
- Standardize templates, libraries, and best practices to improve repeatability and delivery speed.

Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Computer Science, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
Professional Experience
4–7 years of experience in building automation/controls or related MEP projects, including hands‑on programming, integration, and delivery.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency with BAS/EMS programming, controller configuration, and workstation/server setup.
- Experience integrating HVAC/lighting/power/access systems via open protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus, Lon).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and life‑safety drawings/specifications; develop sequences of operation.
- Knowledge of HVAC equipment (e.g., VAV/fan coils, AHUs, boilers, chillers, RTUs, VFDs) and power/energy management.
- Competence in network configuration, cybersecurity basics for OT, and troubleshooting tools.
Project Management
Demonstrated ability to plan and sequence work, manage material procurement, coordinate vendors/subcontractors, and report status on scope, schedule, cost, risks, and quality.
Communication & Collaboration
Strong written and verbal communication; customer‑focused with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences; effective cross‑functional collaborator.
Certifications (Nice to Have)
LEED AP, PMP, PE, CEM, or manufacturer‑specific controls certifications.
Work Environment & Travel
Ability to work on active construction sites and in mechanical/electrical spaces; use hand tools; climb ladders; and travel as needed for project and client support.
