Director of Marketing

Sod Solutions
Awendaw, SC Full Time
POSTED ON 9/12/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 1/10/2027

ABOUT SOD SOLUTIONS

Sod Solutions is a leader in the development, commercialization, and marketing of proprietary turfgrass products. We connect innovative turfgrass genetics with licensed producers, landscape professionals, sports and golf customers, homeowners, retailers, and international markets.

Our business spans four channels: Turfgrass Licensing (domestic and international), Sod Solutions Professionals (landscape professionals), Sod Home (ecommerce for homeowners), and Turf Logistics (SaaS for sod farms). Marketing here has to understand very different customers, businesses and consumers, and help each part of the company hit its growth objectives.

We are seeking a Director of Marketing to lead the next evolution of that effort.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Marketing is changing rapidly. AI now performs much of the research, drafting, analysis, optimization, and content production that once consumed a marketing team's time. We view that as an opportunity.

As execution becomes easier, judgment becomes more valuable: deciding what should be done, why it matters, who it matters to, and how people, AI, technology, data, and creative resources should come together to accomplish it.

We are not simply looking for an experienced marketer who knows how to use AI tools. We are looking for a marketing leader and orchestrator, someone who uses AI extensively while knowing its limits, and who understands that producing more marketing activity is not the objective. Creating better business outcomes is.

WHAT YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

Set marketing direction and translate company and business-unit strategic plans into focused marketing priorities. Lead an AI-enabled marketing organization. Understand the customer, across both B2B and direct-to-consumer audiences. Lead creative and brand development, including brand standards and style guides. Orchestrate people, technology, agencies, and outside specialists. Lead integrated marketing and growth across channels. Use data to improve decisions. Build and lead the marketing team. Collaborate across the company. Manage marketing investment and budget. Exercise strategic judgment.

WHAT SUCCESS REQUIRES

Judgment. You evaluate imperfect information, recognize tradeoffs, set priorities, and decide without a perfect playbook.

Strategic thinking. You connect marketing activity to customers, markets, competitive positioning, and company objectives.

AI fluency. Real experience building generative AI into professional workflows, well beyond prompting a chatbot, with human review and accountability in place.

Orchestration. You direct people, AI systems, technology, data, agencies, and specialists toward a common objective.

Customer understanding. You are genuinely curious about what customers value and how they decide.

Creativity and taste. You know the difference between competent work and compelling work and can explain why.

Leadership. You make the people around you better.

Business acumen. You are as comfortable with budgets, ROI, and resource allocation as with creative work.

Critical thinking. You question assumptions, including conclusions produced by AI.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

7 years of marketing experience, including 4 years leading a team. Experience marketing to both business customers and direct consumers, with a clear understanding of how their buying decisions differ. Demonstrated ability to take a company or business-unit strategic plan and build the marketing strategy that delivers it, with specific examples and measurable outcomes. Experience developing and enforcing brand standards and style guides across internal teams, partners, and channels. Experience scoping, hiring, and managing agencies, contractors, and freelance specialists, including quality standards, timelines, and budget accountability. Demonstrated experience incorporating AI into meaningful marketing or business workflows. Broad working knowledge across multiple marketing disciplines, with deeper expertise in several. Experience developing and managing marketing budgets. Strong analytical and data literacy. Experience working with senior leadership and cross-functional teams. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. High integrity and sound professional judgment.

A bachelor's degree in marketing, business, communications, or a related field is preferred, but demonstrated capability, results, and judgment carry significant weight.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Salary range of $110,000 to $130,000 per year, depending on experience. Health, dental, and vision insurance. Health savings account with a company contribution. 401(k) with a company contribution of up to 3% of salary. Profit sharing. Basic life insurance. Paid vacation.

This is a salaried leadership position based in Awendaw, South Carolina, approximately 30 miles north of Charleston. We care more about results than watching a clock, but meaningful in-person participation with the team is an important part of the role.

HOW TO APPLY

Send a resume and a brief note describing why this role interests you.

In place of a traditional cover letter, please include two or three specific examples of marketing work you have led. For each, tell us: the business objective you were given and who owned it; the marketing strategy you built to achieve it, and what you chose not to do; how you assembled the resources required, including any agencies, contractors, or AI-enabled workflows; and the result, measured as specifically as you can.

We are more interested in your reasoning than in a polished presentation.
