Job Summary
The Pulp Mill Superintendent is responsible for coordinating the safe and efficient operations of production in the mill facility. The Pulp Mill Superintendent coaches assistant superintendents, shift supervisors, and team members to meet safety, quality, production, and all other key performance indicators of the mill facility. The Pulp Mill Superintendent communicates performance expectations to team members, monitors production demands, supervises machine productivity and quality, while managing personnel daily.

- Promote safety and environmental culture and mindset while meeting and exceeding customer’s needs with minimal incidents
- Support the development of the annual strategic production plan for the annual cycle
- Develop the tactical mill production plans supporting the annual strategy by proactively capturing pertinent customer and market data, identifying cost savings opportunities, and ensuring consistent pulp ad fiber supply to achieve production targets
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the pulp mill ensuring that the mill meets company and customer goals and targets for safety, quality, production, on-time delivery, and cost
- Enforce and model plant safety regulations and housekeeping practices and encourage employees to become safety-conscious
- Manage environmental compliance, safety, quality, production and production costs for paper machine and stock prep areas
- Make recommendations to improve safety, environmental compliance, and health of the entire facility
- Maintain effective departmental quality procedures
- Supervise employees to accomplish safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency goals
- Develop and manage the pulp mill budget and manage spending to the budget (e.g. expenditures for chemicals, refiner plates, screen baskets)
- Build effective relationships with all internal departments to produce a superior product and drive operational efficiency
- Control load factors and workflow to ensure maximum use of available capacity and effective use of labor, tools, and equipment
- Maintain department shop floor metrics, visual controls, and continuous improvement methods on the manufacturing floor
- Coordinate, plan, and schedule mill maintenance repairs, outages, and lockouts in a timely manner to ensure customer and manufacturing needs are met (e.g. paper machines, stock prep areas)
- Ensure all maintenance work is completed in a timely manner
- Manage, supervise and coach manufacturing employees through mentoring, training, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions
- Set an example for others by displaying a sense of urgency, care, compassion and passion to be the best
- Communicate effectively with all functional areas of the mill to ensure all production needs are successfully achieved
- Partner with and support direct reports to ensure efficient operations; collaboratively troubleshoot and resolve issues as necessary
- Promote positive employee relations and interdepartmental communication and collaboration
- Provide recommendations on disciplinary action and recommend potential improvements, as necessary
- Strive for continuous improvement for the entire facility as a collective team

- Washers – Vacuum Drum/Brown Stock Diffuser/Chemi Washer
- Post-washing equipment – refining/screening
- MC/Thick Stock Pump
- Safety acumen
- Required: 10 years of pulp/paper mill experience
- Required: 5 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environment
- Preferred: Leadership training and certifications (e.g. supervisory workshops, management development courses)
- Required: High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree
