You must meet these Basic Education Requirements:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

or

Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

In addition to the Basic Requirements above you must have the following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as experience using professional education theory, practice, and national and state education standards to manage educational programs for K-12 school students, teachers and the public in a museum or other educational or cultural organization.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Time-in-Grade Requirements: Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under a non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying).

Responsibilities:

As the Education Manager you will:

  • Provide leadership and direction in the overall planning, development, and implementation of all Native Knowledge 360° initiatives, programs, and activities for the museum. (Native Knowledge 360° is a national education initiative which provides educators and students with critically needed perspectives on Native American history and cultures through the creation of educational resources and educator professional development programs.)

  • Oversee the creation of education products. Research, develop and/or oversee the publication of Native Knowledge 360° content. 

  • Conduct original research, as necessary, and direct education staff and contractors in product development and evaluation.

  • Represent the museum in meetings with local and regional educators and at national meetings of museums and other educators. Lead and participate in workshops, seminars, lectures and other meetings devoted to exploring or encouraging the practice of museum education and the teaching and presentation of Native American culture.
  • Directly supervises education staff. Regularly evaluates performance, conducts formal and informal evaluations of all staff, assesses training needs, and makes recommendations for further staff development.
