Duties

The Education Specialist provides relevant and impactful opportunities for audiences to exchange ideas that affirm and refresh their knowledge of American history and culture filtered through the African American experience.

In This Position, You Will

  • Consult with museum colleagues and partners to conceive, coordinate and conduct and evaluate engaging, participatory, and diverse programs based on an organizational planning road map, further program planning themes, exhibitions and audience development and outreach goals.
  • Develop, produce and distribute informational materials concerning program activities.
  • Propose programming content for the museum web site, social media outlets and other outreach initiatives.
  • Write specifications for purchase orders.
  • Lead the design and evaluation of museum programs that promote the mission of the museum using digital, videotaped, live stream and video conference platforms.
  • Develop and monitor budgets and spending plans.
  • Manage federal and trust funds.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Museum team as well as related Smithsonian staff and community partners, to deliver informal educational strategies for diverse learners of all ages.
  • Supervise staff. Plan and schedule ongoing, production-oriented work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work.

This position has basic education requirements:

  • Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

or

  • Combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in 1 above.

A copy of your unofficial transcripts is required at the time of application.

In Addition To The Basic Education Requirement Above

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as conceiving, developing, implementing, and evaluating educational and public programs for diverse audiences for a museum.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
