SMI Sign Systems, Inc. dba Modulex Mid-Atlantic is a unique, fast-paced architectural sign company with complete commercial in-house manufacturing capabilities based in Frederick, Maryland. We are seeking a self-motivated, high-energy, team player to assist our growth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Reports To: Production Manager
Position Summary
The Router Tech is responsible for operating and maintaining CNC routing equipment to fabricate high-quality components for interior and exterior signage. This role supports production by cutting, shaping, and finishing a variety of materials including acrylic, PVC, aluminum, ACM, HDU, and other substrates used in custom sign fabrication.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where precision and efficiency are critical.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate CNC router(s) to cut and shape sign components according to approved shop drawings and specifications
- Load and set up materials including acrylic, aluminum composite material (ACM), PVC, wood, and other substrates
- Read and interpret shop drawings, work orders, and production files
- Prepare and adjust tool paths as needed (experience with common CNC software preferred)
- Monitor cutting operations to ensure accuracy, quality, and safety
- Perform routine machine maintenance, including bit changes and equipment calibration
- Inspect finished parts for quality and dimensional accuracy
- Assist fabrication team with assembly and finishing as needed
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures
Qualifications
- 2 years of CNC routing or similar machining experience preferred (sign industry experience a plus)
- Ability to read technical drawings and measure accurately using calipers and measuring tools
- Experience working with a variety of sign materials (acrylic, aluminum, HDU, PVC, etc.)
- Basic understanding of CAD/CAM software (e.g., EnRoute, Flexi, VCarve, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
- Team-oriented with strong communication skills
Preferred Skills
- Experience in sign fabrication or architectural millwork
- Knowledge of file setup for dimensional letters and routed panels
- Familiarity with channel letter backing and face cutting
- Ability to troubleshoot machine issues independently
