What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Design Director (Interaction Design) position at Smart Design?
We’re looking for an experienced and talented Associate Design Director to help co-lead our interaction design capability and contribute to business development efforts.
Smart reinvents and evolves products and services using a human-centered approach. Based on user research we work from the front-end of innovation to the final vision and execution. Client needs span emerging tech, digital/physical, mobile and web and range from fast-growing startups to some of the most recognized brands in health & wellness, consumer products, mobility, and non-profits.
This senior role will report to the Executive Design Director and help ensure UX excellence on client projects, build client relationships, and represent Smart in the broader design community through marketing and business development efforts to increase brand awareness and help secure new client opportunities.
While the title is Associate Design Director, we are open to considering Director-level candidates based on experience and qualifications.
The position has four primary areas of focus as outlined below.
Key Responsibilities:
- Billable client work: Whether as a hands-on project lead, or across two projects as a creative director, deliver high quality work across digital product and experience programs with a focus on UX research, UX strategy and high fidelity concepts and
- Business development: Drive content creation, points of view and scoping for pitches and proposals, and maintain contact with past clients for networking and account relationships
- Externally represent Smart: Work with marketing to draft articles and videos for marketing purposes. Speak externally about Smart's capabilities, and attend conferences to stay connected with the design community.
- Grow and mentor a small world-class team of UX designers (~3-5 person team): Manage direct reports, mentor project team members on UX, providing project guidance and helping their professional growth.
Naturally, you have:
- 10 years of experience in product innovation projects leading cutting edge digital projects across web, mobile, embedded and screen-less interfaces
- Past experience with user research to influence and shape strategic design decisions
- The experience and ability to lead complex projects and to be the client-facing lead
- Experience estimating project resource needs for proposals and resourcing
- Commitment to staying current in design trends including emerging technology, software, best practices, and how to work at the front end of innovation all the way through digital development working alongside software developers
- Experience managing and mentoring designers in their professional growth and development of traditional interaction design deliverables (user flows, wireframes, personas, prototypes) and UI/production ready assets.
- Skill in presenting (selling solutions) to clients
- Bonus if you’re active within the design community via thought leadership, panel engagements, judging, etc.
Please note, the role is based in Brooklyn and the candidate will be onsite a minimum of 3 days per week.
The salary range will be dependent on experience and from a full-time salary perspective will range from $140,000-$160,000 plus benefits at the AD level, and 160,000-185k at the Director level.
