What are the responsibilities and job description for the District Counselor (2026-2027) position at Slidell Independent School District?
Primary Purpose:
To provide comprehensive counseling services to support the academic, social-emotional, and career development of all students across the district. The District Counselor collaborates with school staff, families, and community partners to ensure that students’ needs are met and that all students have equitable opportunities for success.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in Counseling or related field

Valid Texas School Counselor Certification
Experience:
-
Minimum 3 years of successful counseling experience preferred

Experience working across multiple grade levels (elementary, middle, and/or high school)

Strong knowledge of mental health practices and school support systems
Special Knowledge/Skills:

Understanding of state and federal education laws and ethical standards related to counseling

Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

Ability to analyze student data and support intervention strategies

Knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), Section 504, and special education processes
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance and Counseling Program

Develop, implement, and oversee a districtwide comprehensive guidance and counseling program.

Provide direct counseling services to students, including individual, group, and crisis counseling.
Student Support and Crisis Response

Serve as a lead in crisis intervention and provide support during emergency situations.

Work with administrators, staff, and families to provide appropriate mental health referrals and community resources.

Support students experiencing barriers to learning, including trauma, behavioral concerns, or family disruptions.
Consultation and Collaboration

Provide consultation to teachers, administrators, and parents regarding student needs and effective support strategies.

Facilitate professional development for staff related to mental health, trauma-informed practices, SEL, and student behavior.

Support Section 504 and MTSS processes at a district level as assigned.
Compliance and Documentation

Maintain accurate and confidential records in compliance with district policy and legal standards.

Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of counseling services and make program adjustments.

Prepare reports and documentation as required for state accountability, grants, or program evaluations.
