About the Role:
The Part-Time F5 Engineer will administer, maintain, secure, and troubleshoot the organization’s F5 BIG-IP environment. The engineer will support application load balancing, high availability, SSL/TLS services, traffic management, application onboarding, upgrades, incident resolution, and documentation.
F5’s current certification program begins with the F5 Certified Administrator, BIG-IP, while the F5 Certified Technology Specialist, BIG-IP more advanced design, implementation, maintenance, optimization, and troubleshooting capabilities.
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Configure and maintain BIG-IP LTM components, including:Virtual servers
- Pools and pool members, Nodes, Health monitors, Profiles, SNATs, Persistence profiles, Load-balancing methods
Design and support highly available F5 environments, including:
- Active/standby configurations, Device trust, Configuration synchronization, Traffic groups, Failover testing, Disaster-recovery validation
Configure and maintain SSL/TLS services:
- Install and renew certificates, Manage private keys and certificate chains, Configure client-side and server-side SSL profiles, Remove weak protocols and cipher suites, Troubleshoot TLS handshake and certificate issues.
Develop and maintain:
F5 iRules, Local Traffic Policies, HTTP redirects and header modifications, URL-routing rules, Application-specific traffic-management policies, Troubleshoot application delivery and network issues across Layers 4–7 using:
- tmsh
- tcpdump
- BIG-IP logs
- QKView
- F5 iHealth
- Packet captures
- HTTP and SSL diagnostic tools
Support application onboarding by working with application, network, security, firewall, DNS, and infrastructure teams.
Monitor system availability, resource utilization, connection counts, traffic performance, pool-member health, and application response times.
Perform software upgrades, hotfix installations, vulnerability remediation, and configuration migrations following approved change-management procedures.
Review F5 security advisories and assess whether identified vulnerabilities affect the deployed BIG-IP version and enabled modules.
Maintain configuration backups and verify recovery procedures before upgrades or major changes.
Provide support for additional F5 modules when included in scope:
- BIG-IP Advanced WAF or ASM
- BIG-IP DNS/GTM
- BIG-IP APM
- AFM
- SSL Orchestrator
- BIG-IQ
Create and maintain:
- Network and traffic-flow diagrams, Standard operating procedures, Application onboarding documents, Upgrade and rollback plans, Troubleshooting runbooks, Incident and root-cause-analysis reports, Inventory and certificate-expiration records
- Provide knowledge transfer and technical guidance to internal network, and application teams.
