Who We Are Looking For

Slate is looking for a dynamic, experienced Manufacturing Quality Engineer to join our growing team. The position will primarily focus on new products and process development and will play a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and successful launch. The role will utilize core quality skills and tools to manufacture and deliver the highest quality products within our various manufacturing processes. The expectation will be to work closely with internal and external partners to ensure we exceed customers’ expectations.

What You Get To Do

  • Lead and manage a team of quality team leaders, auditors, and metrology lab team members: Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure the success of both quality and metrology teams. Foster a collaborative environment and drive accountability for performance and conduct across all levels, including hourly colleagues.
  • Lead disciplinary actions and performance evaluations: Oversee and conduct formal performance reviews and disciplinary processes for team leaders, hourly colleagues, and metrology lab staff, ensuring consistent application of company policies and supporting professional development.
  • Develop and Implement Quality Processes: Establish and maintain robust quality assurance and control processes for Voice of Customer (VoC) and Metrology labs, covering seating and general assembly audits and related processes. Ensure alignment with JD Powers, Warranty, and internal standards. Analyze JD Powers data and integrate key findings into both VoC and metrology processes to drive continuous improvement initiatives. Effectively communicate and report these insights and resulting actions to corporate and manufacturing teams, ensuring organization-wide alignment and visibility.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with various teams to ensure quality requirements are developed and seamlessly integrated into the manufacturing process from the VoC outputs.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis: Identify and address technical and process quality issues through root cause analysis, implementing corrective and preventive actions in collaboration with manufacturing, engineering, and other cross-functional teams. Clearly communicate findings, actions, and progress by reporting to management and relevant cross-functional groups to ensure alignment and visibility.
  • Perform Audits and Inspections: Regularly audit and inspect manufacturing processes and metrology labs to ensure adherence to quality standards and specifications, especially for new car launches for VoC.
  • Supplier Quality Management: Collaborate with the supplier quality team to set and monitor quality expectations for incoming materials and components.
  • Maintain Quality Documentation: Develop and maintain essential quality documentation, including control plans, inspection procedures, and quality manuals.
  • Risk Minimization: Utilize risk assessment tools to minimize risks and verify the robustness of detection and prevention systems for special characteristics through the VoC, identifying the best tools and methods for equipment.
  • Support FMEA Development: Assist in the development and maintenance of Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Define Quality Processes and Standards for VoC: Work with development, product management, and manufacturing teams to define quality processes and technical standards.
  • Evaluate Product Test Drives: Support the planning and evaluation of product test drives (BSR test track) to ensure quality and approval of functions and systems from VoC, utilizing validation data.
  • Provide Quality Support: Offer quality support to technical, manufacturing, and metrology lab teams, driving and supporting daily operations with a focus on lab support and rework approvals from a VoC perspective.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned, including those related to VoC metrology.

What You Bring To The Team

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, Quality Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in engineering or quality assurance and control within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience with Voice of Customer (VoC) processes and General Assembly audits.
  • Experience in metrology and the application of metrology standards in manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in quality management systems (QMS) and tools such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Strong knowledge of metrology equipment and techniques with MSA requirements.
  • Ability to conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Familiarity with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and risk assessment tools.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and make data-driven decisions.
  • Experience in using metrology data for quality validation and process improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in supplier quality management and the ability to set and monitor quality expectations for incoming materials.
  • High attention to detail, especially in maintaining quality documentation and ensuring the accuracy and precision of metrology equipment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to perform additional duties as assigned, including those related to metrology.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, a high level of assertiveness as well as entrepreneurial thinking and goal- and result-oriented decision-making skills.
  • Proven track record of engaging and participating in high-performing teams.
  • Proficient in the use of commonly applied quality tools and processes in the automotive industry (e.g. AIAG, IATF 169494, MSA, SPC, APQP, PPAP etc.).
  • Good working knowledge of process documentation for VoC audits and metrology.
  • Highest level of integrity and the ability to make data-driven decisions.
