What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quality Technician position at SKS Manufacturing Inc.?
Job Summary
We are seeking a Quality Technician to join our small, family-owned aerospace machine shop. We take pride in offering a close-knit work environment with great benefits and a commitment to quality craftsmanship. This role is crucial for ensuring that every component manufactured meets stringent aerospace specifications, with a strong focus on real-time, in-process quality checks and comprehensive First Article Inspections.
Duties
In-Process Quality Assurance & Operation Checkouts
- Operation Sign-Offs: Act as the primary quality gatekeeper on the shop floor, performing individual operation checkouts (e.g., machining steps, deburr, assembly stages) as required by the manufacturing plan.
First Article Inspection (FAI) and Final Inspection
- Execution of FAIs: Take ownership of performing complete First Article Inspections (FAI) per AS9100 requirements for new parts, new processes, or after significant setup changes.
- FAIR/PPAP Documentation: Generate and meticulously review all necessary documentation to complete the First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs)/Production Part Approval Process (PPAPs), including ballooned drawings, material certifications, and traceability records.
- Final Inspection: Perform thorough final inspections of completed assemblies and detailed parts, ensuring all previous operations are signed off and all customer-specific quality requirements are met prior to shipment.
Metrology and Compliance
- Precision Measurement: Utilize and program precision measuring equipment, including CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), height gauges, micrometers, and calipers, to measure complex aerospace features.
- Non-Conformance Management: Initiate, document, and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs). Participate in the root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) processes related to operational and FAI failures.
- System Compliance: Maintain adherence to the AS9100 Quality Management System and all internal procedures and customer flow-down requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a Quality Inspection role within an aerospace or high-precision machining environment.
- Technical Expertise: Proven mastery of GD&T and the ability to apply it practically to verify part dimensions during operation checkouts and FAIs.
- CMM Proficiency: Demonstrated experience operating and/or programming CMM equipment is highly desirable.
- Documentation: Strong experience in creating, reviewing, and approving AS9100 First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs).
- Relevant Quality Certifications (e.g., ASQ Certified Quality Inspector/Technician).
- Prior experience in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Action (CAPA).
- Familiarity with various material certifications and heat treatment/special process documentation.
- Real-Time Verification: Conduct frequent in-process inspections to monitor dimensional accuracy and surface finish, immediately halting production and escalating issues upon detection of non-conformance.
- Blueprint and GD&T Interpretation: Quickly and accurately interpret complex engineering blueprints and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to determine measurement points for operation checkouts.
- Tool Proofing: Verify that machine tool offsets and fixturing are correct at the start of a run to prevent errors.
