Position Summary:

The Custodian ensures Skokie Public Library remains clean, safe, and inviting for all visitors. This role includes routine cleaning, light maintenance, event setup, and seasonal grounds care to support the library’s mission.

Schedule:

Monday 6am – 2pm

Tuesday 6am – 2pm

Wednesday OFF

Thursday OFF

Friday 6am – 2pm

Saturday 10am – 6pm

Sunday 10am – 6pm

Essential Functions:

• Maintain cleanliness of all areas: sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and clean glass surfaces.
• Sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies.
• Collect and dispose of trash and recycling.
• Set up and arrange furniture for programs and events.
• Perform light maintenance, including lighting checks and minor repairs.
• Care for outdoor grounds: mow, weed, prune, and clear snow/ice.
• Make deliveries and assist with library operations as needed.
• Follow library policies and ensure reliable, punctual attendance.

Qualifications:

 - Required: 

• Previous custodial and maintenance experience
  
• Ability to perform the physical tasks listed under Working Conditions
• Strong teamwork and customer service skills.

 - Preferred:

• Ability to communicate in another language relevant to the Skokie community
• Current valid driver’s license and good driving record
• Building repair experience
• Previous use of electrical and mechanical tools/equipment

Working Conditions:

• This is an onsite position requiring physical activity and flexibility to meet the needs of the library.
• Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and lifting/moving materials (up to 75 lbs).
• Frequent walking throughout the building and grounds; occasional ladder use.
• Manual dexterity and correctable vision required.
• Work may occur in varying temperatures (hot/cold) while maintaining outdoor areas.
• Moderate noise level; may be high when using equipment.
• Schedule flexibility, including days, evenings, weekends, and occasional off-hours; changes may occur based on library needs.

This role requires strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a flexible, proactive approach to changing priorities. Successful candidates demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, adaptability, and a commitment to excellent customer service while maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and library patrons.

Compensation and Benefits:

• The pay range for new hires in this position is $17.88 to $22.35 per hour. Offers are made within this range based on competencies, experience, and internal equity
