About the Job
Our client is seeking an experienced Controls Programmer / Software Engineer to join their team as a Building Automation Controls Engineer.
The successful candidate will work independently under the guidance of the Operations and Engineering Manager and will be responsible for engineering, programming, troubleshooting, commissioning, and supporting Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC control systems.
This is an excellent opportunity for a controls professional with strong DDC programming and BAS experience who enjoys solving technical challenges and delivering high-quality automation solutions.
Key Responsibilities
System Programming & Engineering
- Engineer and program new Direct Digital Control (DDC) projects.
- Program, monitor, install, and support Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Work with HVAC controls and integrated building systems.
- Develop and maintain graphical web interfaces for system monitoring and diagnostics.
- Configure and integrate controllers, sensors, and other building automation components.
Troubleshooting & Commissioning
- Troubleshoot HVAC control systems, computers, controllers, and related equipment.
- Identify whether issues are related to HVAC equipment, controls, software, or communication systems.
- Perform system testing, startup, commissioning, and integration.
- Verify system functionality and resolve issues before project completion.
Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare and maintain as-built drawings and project documentation.
- Complete system records, closeout documentation, and related technical reports.
- Ensure control systems meet project specifications, design requirements, and applicable standards.
Customer & Project Support
- Work independently and collaboratively with project teams.
- Communicate effectively with customers, engineers, technicians, and internal teams.
- Manage assigned tasks and meet project deadlines.
- Maintain a strong focus on quality, customer satisfaction, and technical accuracy.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of programming experience; 5 years preferred.
- Hands-on experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC controls.
- Experience with DDC programming and controls engineering.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents and control drawings.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to distinguish between HVAC equipment, controller, software, and communication issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and customer-focused.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced project environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Tridium AX certification is highly preferred.
- Experience with temperature control systems such as:
- Alerton
- Honeywell
- Johnson Controls
- Trane
- Schneider
- Siemens
- Familiarity with:
- BACnet
- DDC
- Niagara AX
- ALC
- Siemens
- Metasys
- Experience with BAS graphical interfaces and web-based monitoring systems.
- Experience with AutoCAD and PDF software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Visio.
Education
A 4-year degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field is preferred.
