Job Summary:

Responsible for monitoring and operating equipment in a power plant that generates medium-pressure steam and chilled water. Supports safe, efficient, and continuous plant operations under the direction of senior staff.

On-site training provided. Full-time, hourly (Non-Exempt) position, day shift, rotating weekends required. Offers generous time-off policy and comprehensive benefits package.

Job Duties:

  • Operates boilers, generators, and auxiliary equipment at the power plant and associated buildings. Monitors the control board and regulates equipment according to procedures and readings from instruments.
  • Ensures the safe operation and maintenance of campus equipment, including medium-pressure steam boilers, mechanical chillers, cooling towers, HVAC systems, emergency power generators, and related mechanical equipment.
  • Adjusts gauges and dials, records temperatures, and monitors output; performs maintenance as needed.
  • Records meter readings accurately; requires basic math skills and legible handwriting.
  • Troubleshoots and performs mechanical repairs on related equipment.
  • Reads and interprets shop drawings, blueprints, equipment manuals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Uses test equipment for repair or diagnostic purposes on plant equipment.
  • Operates hand tools and specialized tools required for maintenance and repairs.
  • Uses BAS and CMMS systems to monitor work orders and equipment status.
  • Monitors weather conditions and forecasts to adjust heating or cooling loads as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with managers and other operators regarding changes or issues in plant operations.
  • Responds to office and cell phone service calls and emergencies on campus promptly and coordinates additional personnel as needed.
  • Keeps accurate records of work requests, including caller information, issue description, and actions taken.
  • Maintains a clean and safe plant environment at all times.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Trade school certification in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical equipment preferred.
  • Six months to one year of experience with boilers and HVAC systems preferred.
  • Must be able to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, equipment manuals, and wiring diagrams.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of medium-pressure boilers, HVAC equipment, and related mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with electrical, pneumatic, and computer controls for boilers, CMMS, and HVAC systems.
  • Understanding of relevant mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
  • Ability to use hand tools and specialized equipment for maintenance and repair.
  • Proficiency with computer equipment for equipment monitoring and control.
  • Ability to work around high-voltage equipment and high-pressure piping.
  • Ability to read meters and gauges and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to detect operational defects and report them to management.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work with high-voltage equipment and high-pressure piping.
  • Frequently bends, stoops, reaches, climbs, or stands for extended periods.
  • Must be able to move heavy objects and carry tools that weigh 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to climb on ladders and equipment that are of considerable height.

Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to hazardous work environments, including tanks and boiler drums.
  • Required to enter spaces that may be damp, poorly lit, or poorly ventilated.
  • May encounter unpleasant fumes, odors, toxic chemicals, and fuels that could cause burns.
  • Constant exposure to high temperatures, high-pressure systems, and high-speed rotating equipment.
  • Potential exposure to cutting, grinding, or welding operations that could cause burns or eye injuries.
  • Work may involve extreme temperature variations in all seasons.
