The Van Transporter is responsible for safely transporting patients and equipment or supplies between the hospital and designated locations. This role requires excellent driving skills, strong customer service, and the ability to assist patients with varying mobility needs while ensuring their comfort and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Safe Driving & Transportation
- Operate hospital-owned vehicles in accordance with traffic laws, hospital policies, and safety standards.
- Transport patients to and from medical appointments, and other designated destinations.
- Transport supplies and equipment to off-site locations as assigned.
- Maintain awareness of road conditions and plan routes to ensure timely arrivals.
- Patient Assistance
- Assist patients entering and exiting the vehicle, including those using wheelchairs, walkers, or stretchers.
- Secure patients and mobility devices with proper restraints to ensure safety during transport.
- Provide courteous, respectful, and reassuring communication to patients and families.
- When not providing van transport, assists with wheelchair and stretcher transports to EMC and the Medical Mall.
- Vehicle Maintenance & Safety
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, checking fuel, tires, brakes, lights, wheelchair lifts, and safety equipment.
- Report any vehicle malfunctions or safety concerns to the Facilities Director immediately.
- Keep vehicles clean and stocked with necessary supplies (blankets, first aid kits, sanitation items).
- Cleans and sanitizes vehicle following patient transports.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately complete trip logs, mileage reports, and patient transport records.
- Follow HIPAA guidelines to protect patient privacy during transport.
- Adhere to all infection prevention and hospital safety protocols.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Licensure/Certification:
- Valid state driver’s license with clean driving record; F endorsement required
- American Heart Association CPR certification
- Basic first aid training
- Experience: Previous driving experience required; prior patient transport or healthcare experience preferred.
- Skills:
- Safe driving and navigation skills.
- Ability to assist and lift patients safely.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of infection control practices.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent standing, bending, and assisting with patient transfers.
- Ability to operate a wheelchair lift and secure mobility devices.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during transport.
- Interaction with patients who may have limited mobility, chronic illness, or disabilities.
