POSITION SUMMARY: The Smoking Safety / Recreation Aide assists in the planning, organizing and directing of supervised smoking intervals and outdoor leisure for residents. This role ensures the safety of residents during smoking activities in accord with resident’s needs and facility safety protocols. The Aide prepares reports on the residents’ participation and safety compliance as may be required.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Assists in planning and promoting safe recreation and smoking intervals based on the needs and interests of the resident;
- Encourages social communication through group interaction in designated leisure areas;
- Provides constant supervision and vigilance to ensure fire safety and accident prevention;
- Assists residents with participation in scheduled smoking times;
- Assists residents with leisure recreation and outdoor fresh air breaks;
- Ensures all smoking materials (lighters/tobacco) are collected and stored securely per facility policy;
- Assists with the maintenance and use of safety equipment, including smoking aprons and fire-safe containers;
- Documents resident attendance, and participation level, at smoking programs; may assist with maintaining safety compliance logs;
- Attends appropriate in-service training programs regarding fire safety and respiratory care;
- Assists in the maintenance and cleanliness of the designated smoking/outdoor areas;
- Performs other responsibilities as directed by the Recreation Director;
- Assists in transporting residents to and from the designated smoking area;
- Ensures that residents receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;
- Performs other duties as requested.
- High school degree or equivalent;
- Certification in accordance with regulatory agencies governing the facility.
- Must be able to read, write and understand the English language.
- Effective communicator with excellent verbal/written skills.
- High level of alertness and observational skills for resident safety.
- Ability to firmly but kindly enforce safety regulations.
- Perform record keeping and documentation, as necessary.
- Ability to positively interact with personnel, residents, family members, and visitors.
- Provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
- Interacts with residents, families, visitors and employees.
- Carries out other tasks as requested in situations where hands-on intervention/participation (such as resident transport or safety assistance) may be required.
