As the Dock Supervisor you will be a vital member at one of our California processing facilities that provides an integral service to the fishing vessels as they come to offload at the Silver Bay Seafoods dock. You will coordinate with Fleet, Plant and Production Managers, as well as fishing vessels to organize and schedule efficient offloads. In this role as the Dock Supervisor, you may manage a crew of 2-8 Dock Crew members.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Supervise all dock tasks including offloads, servicing ice, etc.
  • Monitor location and well-being of all off-loaded tender equipment.
  • Monitor condition and keep an updated inventory of all dock-related equipment.
  • Stay in constant communication with Fishermen and Tank Leads to ensure effective/constant flow of fish into the plant.
  • Provide ice as needed for fishing vessels.
  • Supervise crew consisting of Dock Supervisor and 2-8 Dock Leads.
  • Ensure all OSHA/AKOSH/EPA standards and company policies are being met.
  • Coordinate with crew members of vessels for use of vessel’s crane for removal of hatch covers and stinger manipulation.
  • Operate equipment safely and within its limitations and Silver Bay’s company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good housekeeping of upper and lower dock.
  • Move products and other materials to and from warehouse, delivery vehicles, vessels, and containers by hand or using forklifts and other equipment.
  • Conduct thorough training sessions to equip new dock crew members with the necessary skills and knowledge
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Competencies

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following functional and interpersonal competencies:

Functional

  • Nautical Skills: Basic knowledge of nautical terms, navigation, and seamanship.
  • Physical Fitness: Lift and carry weight in excess of 50 pounds repeatedly. Perform repetitive tasks for extended periods of time. Work long hours in all kinds of weather.
  • Safety Awareness: Strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures, including emergency response.
  • Equipment Knowledge: The Dock Supervisor position requires driven machinery certifications such as a forklift, which in turn requires a valid driver’s license. Familiarity with various marine equipment, including winches, cranes, and anchors.
  • Maintenance Skills: Basic mechanical skills to assist with maintenance and repairs of ship equipment.
  • Environmental Awareness: Understanding of environmental regulations and practices to protect marine ecosystems.

Interpersonal

  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, often in closed quarters and under demanding conditions. The Dock Supervisor must also be highly self-motivated and demonstrate a sound work ethic.
  • Communication: Must exhibit strong multi-tasking and time management skills as well as excellent written/verbal communication. Clear and effective communication skills.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing work conditions and schedules. Work at least 16 hours per day, 7 days per week for the duration of the contract.
  • Decision-Making: Ability to make informed decisions quickly and effectively.
  • Conflict Resolution: Skill in resolving disputes and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve problems that may arise during offloads, scheduling vessels or changes in weather conditions.
  • Stress Management: Ability to manage stress and work under pressure.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred but not required.
  • 2 years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role, ideally within the seafood industry, is required.

Work Environment and Schedule

The Dock Supervisor is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to a full spectrum of outside weather conditions from wet/humid conditions with extreme cold to dry sunny conditions with exposure to direct sunlight. Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. Position requires onsite presence at one of our Alaska processing facilities, and the ability to travel, including at times in remote locations.

Physical Demands
While performing your job as the Dock Supervisor you will be exposed to physically demanding conditions. The role often requires prolonged standing, walking, and lifting heavy objects, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. This includes lifting and carrying heavy crates, boxes, and equipment, as well as pushing and pulling heavy carts. The work can be physically strenuous, requiring strength, stamina, and endurance. Additionally, the job may involve bending, stooping, and kneeling to access and move cargo. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use teamwork skills. The employee will frequently use interpersonal and customer service skills. Employees must be able to withstand moderate to high levels of stress.
