We are looking to expand the team at our Bessemer City North Carolina production facility. We are looking for a motivated and outgoing individual to fill a full-time Maintenance Technician position at this facility.
Position Summary:
The Maintenance Technician is responsible for plant-wide asset reliability, focusing on major mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs of injection molding presses (ranging from 100 to 1200 tons), central material handling systems, and automated cell robotics. This role prioritizes rapid, root cause troubleshooting and comprehensive diagnostic repair to keep production running safely and efficiently.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Major Equipment Diagnosis & Repair:
- Troubleshoot and execute major repairs on complex production machinery, including rebuilding hydraulic pumps, replacing proportional valves, replacing screw and barrel assemblies, repairing toggle links, and diagnosing electrical faults down to the board/component level.
Machine Startup, Shutdown & Setups:
- Initiate and terminate machine operations according to documented technical procedures. Load verified, master press parameters from the control architecture, ensuring cycle times, melt temperatures, injection speeds, and holding pressures align perfectly with the established master process sheet.
Electrical & Automation Support:
- Read and interpret complex hydraulic schematics, electrical blueprints, and pneumatic diagrams. Diagnose automation faults, test PLC inputs/outputs, and service automated material loading, blending, and drying networks.
Operational Support & Escalation:
- Respond instantly to floor maintenance calls. Function as the primary technical resource for production team when machine faults stall production, performing rapid, logical root-cause analysis to implement long-term mechanical fixes rather than temporary adjustments.
Advanced Preventive Maintenance & Refurbishment:
- Execute deep, structural PM schedules (e.g., annual press alignments, tie-bar strain testing, oil analysis filtration loops). Completely overhaul auxiliary systems, grinders, and chilling towers as directed by the master maintenance calendar.
Mold Maintenance & Repair:
- Perform preventative maintenance, disassembly, cleaning, repair, and reassembly of complex plastic injection molds and hot runner systems.
Tooling Modifications:
- Execute precision mold modifications, engineering changes, and tooling repairs to correct defects (e.g., flash, short shots, dimensional variances) and optimize cycle times.
Machining & Fabrication:
- Safely set up and operate tool room equipment—including manual or CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, and EDM machines—to fabricate, repair, or modify core pins, inserts, and other tool components.
Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose tooling issues directly at the molding press in collaboration with process engineers or operators to minimize downtime.
Documentation:
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation of mold histories, modifications, preventative maintenance logs, and spare parts inventory.
ROLE-SPECIFIC GMP & SOP EXPECTATIONS
- Strict Maintenance Documentation: Every mechanical intervention, part replacement, and structural modification must be completely logged before an asset can be formally turned back over to Production.
- Strict adherence to environmental, safety, and operational SOPs, including comprehensive Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space Entry, and Hot Work Permit guidelines. Maintain tools and maintenance carts according to 5S accountability standards to prevent foreign material contamination on the production floor.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma required, Industrial Maintenance Degree, Journeyman card, or Military Technical training highly desired.
- Minimum 5 years of industrial maintenance experience specializing directly in heavy industrial machinery, with a minimum of 2 years dedicated to injection molding equipment.
- Tooling Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of direct experience in tool making, die maintenance, or specifically working with injection molding tooling desired,
- Machining Proficiency: Proven ability to set up and operate standard tool room machinery (mills, lathes, grinders) to tight tolerances.
- Technical Literacy: Strong ability to read, interpret, and work from complex blueprints, 2D/3D CAD models, and schematic drawings.
- Process Knowledge: Solid understanding of the plastic injection molding process, mold design, metallurgy, and cooling/venting principles.
- Precision Tools: Proficiency with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.) for quality control and part verification.
- Expertise in reading and debugging 480V 3-phase electrical systems, controls, and industrial hydraulics.
- Proficiency in basic machining, welding (TIG/MIG), and fabrications for fixture support is a plus.
