POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Human Resources (HR) Specialist to join our growing team. The HR
Specialist will be responsible for supporting all aspects of human resources practices and
processes, including employee recruitment, employee relations, performance management,
compensation and benefits administration, onboarding, compliance with employment laws, and
fostering a positive work culture. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and
a passion for helping people thrive in their careers. The HR Specialist will play a vital role in
supporting Sierra Institute employees as they work collectively to advance landscape restoration
and community resilience efforts. This position may be full-time or part-time, depending on the
candidate’s availability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Aid recruitment and hiring processes, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for both candidates and supervisors.
- Support employee relations, offering assistance in conflict resolution, performance evaluations, and employee engagement initiatives.
- Propose HR policies & procedures to ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate benefits administration, including health, retirement, and other employee benefits.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HR trends, best practices, and employment law.
- Handle confidential information and ensure the privacy of employee records.
- Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure alignment and track progress on projects.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in human resources or a related field.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state (California) HR policies, employment laws, and best practices.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build strong relationships with employees and management.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Primarily office-based work, requiring regular use of a computer.
- Some travel (up to 20%) for meetings, site visits, and workshops, with occasional overnight stays (typically less than 1 night per month).
- Standard office hours (7:30 AM – 5:30 PM, Monday–Friday), with flexibility for fieldwork and project needs.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The wage for this position will be commensurate with experience.
- Mid-level range: $65,000 – $75,000 annually; Senior-level range: $75,000 – $90,000 annually
