At Shoreline College, our students have a unique opportunity to combine understanding of science and engineering in our courses and degrees. The Chemistry department provides educational experiences and opportunities to all students interested in studying and taking classes in fields of chemistry, along with many other STEM disciplines. The Instructional & Classroom Support Technician 3 will perform professional/technical instructional support of chemistry courses involving the use of scientific, technical and/or academic subject matter knowledge.
Essential Job Duties:
- Coordinating instructional support activities for the daily operation and function of the chemistry lab
- Modifying and setting up experiments as part of the chemistry department team
- Constructing and testing equipment used for lecture demonstrations and laboratory experiments
- Advising instructors of potential problems with existing experiments, protocols, or equipment
- Assisting instructors with laboratory materials
- Monitoring laboratories to ensure compliance with safety procedures
- Proper handling and disposal of chemical waste
- Running and maintaining laboratory instruments, including but not limited to:
- Spectrophotometers
- NMR
- FTIR
- GCMS
- Polarimeters
- UV/Vis spectrophotometers
- Determining need for materials, equipment and instruments necessary for courses, as well as ordering/stocking the necessary items
Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Basic or Applied Science AND Two (2) full-time years of experience as an Instruction & Classroom Support Tech 2
- OR Equivalent education/experience
- Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Access and/or PowerPoint
- Microsoft Teams and Zoom
- Inorganic and Organic Chemistry fundamentals
- Supplies, materials, and instruments used in the Chemistry labs
- Repair and maintenance (basic hardware/software calibration) of laboratory instrumentation
- Laboratory safety procedures, including the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials
- State and federal regulations regarding chemical and safety standards
- Clerical processes such as filing, tracking inventories, scheduling, creating correspondence, and responding to inquiries
- Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence
- Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities
- Entering and retrieving data accurately in computerized record keeping systems
- Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with individuals inside and/or outside of the College
- Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels
- Supporting instructional needs of Chemistry students in small groups or one-on-one settings
- Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner
- Working in office and laboratory settings
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk/computer station, using repetitive arm, hand, and finger movements
- Using appropriate personal protection equipment
- Lifting/maneuvering up to 40 lbs.
This position is allocated to pay range 47, under the Washington State Office of Financial Management higher education salary schedule. Salary placement for new employees is determined by the College; calculations use years of directly related experience. This position works 40 hours per week, with a schedule dependent upon department needs. Hiring of this position is contingent on available funding as determined by the College President.
