What are the responsibilities and job description for the VP, Product position at Shoplift?
The Opportunity
Shoplift is building the world's first self-optimizing storefront—a platform that drives autonomous growth for online retailers like Kith, Liquid Death, and Casper. We've achieved strong product-market pull with thousands of merchants and are at a pivotal inflection point: scaling from a founder-led product motion to professional product leadership.
We're hiring a VP of Product to own the entire product function—strategy, roadmap, organization building, and outcomes. This role will professionalize how product works at Shoplift: establishing the systems, decision frameworks, and strategic discipline needed to scale. You'll define what "self-optimizing storefronts" means in ecommerce, build the team and processes to deliver it, and drive measurable business impact through product-led growth, retention, and expansion.
This is the moment where the right product leader can materially change our trajectory.
What You'll Own
Product Strategy, Vision, & Direction
Define and communicate a clear long-term product vision aligned with company strategy. Set direction for what we build, why it matters, and how it differentiates us in the market. Translate strategy into a coherent roadmap that balances innovation, merchant needs, and business priorities. Ensure all product teams are aligned around a shared understanding of goals, success measures, and tradeoffs.
Product Organization Leadership
Build, scale, and lead the entire product function—not just PMs, but the systems, rituals, and processes that make product excellent. Establish hiring philosophy, planning cadence, decision frameworks, and accountability mechanisms.
Product Management
Lead the end-to-end lifecycle of the product from roadmap definition to delivery and iteration. Ensure high-quality execution, reliable delivery, and measurable adoption of new capabilities. Balance innovation and operational excellence by prioritizing impact, speed, and quality in all releases. Establish clear product process: how we prioritize, how decisions get made, what "definition of done" means. Make hard tradeoffs between new capabilities and technical debt.
Product Positioning
Own how the product competes and wins in the market. Conduct ongoing market research to understand the competitive landscape, platform trends, feature differentiation, and pricing models. Define and evolve pricing and packaging strategies that align with merchant value, product usage patterns, and business growth goals. Ensure the product’s value proposition, positioning, and monetization model are cohesive and inform go-to-market alignment.
Product Analytics
Define how success is measured for every product initiative. Ensure product analytics systems are instrumented correctly and insights flow into decision-making. Partner with Data and Growth to quantify product performance, usage patterns, and merchant impact.
Product Merchandising
Ensure the right features are discoverable, understood, and adopted. Drive in-product communication, feature activation, and cross-sell/upsell experiences that surface value to merchant at the right time.
Product-Led Growth (PLG)
Build self-serve growth loops into the product experience. Design shareable, viral, or usage-based mechanisms (e.g., shareable reports, feature unlocks) that drive organic adoption and expansion. Collaborate with Marketing and Growth to align PLG efforts with overall revenue strategy.
Product Documentation
Own the quality and completeness of product guides, tutorials, and help content. Ensure documentation is clear, up to date, and supports both onboarding and self-serve merchants.
Product Stickiness
Drive product stickiness and expansion through value realization and engagement. Design experiences that make the product indispensable increasing usage depth and multi-feature adoption. Partner with Growth Teams to identify product signals of expansion or churn risk, and prioritize roadmap initiatives that strengthen NDR.
Customer Empathy
Own our customer feedback loops. Ensure every feature is grounded in deep understanding of how ecommerce operators accelerate their success—their workflows, pain points, friction, and aspirations.
Support Experience & Systems
Own the support experience as an internal product: scoped, prioritized, and maintained with rigor. Partner with Engineering & Customer Success to ensure systems and processes meet internal SLAs. Build clear visibility into support data and patterns so product teams can identify recurring issues, quantify friction, and prioritize fixes or improvements in the roadmap.
Cross-Functional Partnership
Work closely with Engineering, Success, Sales, and Marketing. Partner with co-founder Jason Boit (Head of Product Experience) to ensure design and architecture amplify product strategy.
Metrics & Outcomes
Own key business outcomes: retention, engagement depth, net dollar retention. Connect product bets to measurable impact.
What We're Looking For
Must-Haves:
- 10 years in Product, including senior leadership (Director/VP/Head of Product/CPO) at a B2B SaaS or ecommerce platform company. Ideal candidates have built products for mid-market buyers—you understand the unique dynamics of selling to companies that aren't enterprise giants but demand more than SMB-tier solutions.
- Scaling startup experience: You've led product at a company that grew from Series A through Series C or D—you've seen what breaks along the way and know how to evolve product strategy, team structure, and execution as the company scales. Not just a single-stage operator, but someone who's navigated the full early-to-growth arc.
- NDR/expansion expertise: You've built features and strategies that materially improved net dollar retention. You understand the levers that drive expansion revenue and have specific examples of product work that increased customer LTV.
- Technical fluency: Comfortable discussing architectural tradeoffs, tech debt, and developer workflows. You've worked credibly with senior engineering teams.
- Design partnership: You see design as a strategic partner and have successfully collaborated with strong design leaders. You can show examples where design-product partnership made the product meaningfully better.
- Team building: Experience hiring and developing PMs. You're a magnet for talent who can raise the bar as we scale.
- Collaborative leadership: Low ego, high trust operator who thrives in partnership with founders and cross-functional leaders. You're comfortable with collaborative leadership and don't need to own everything to be effective.
- Hands-on execution: Can shift seamlessly between long-term strategy and IC-level work. You're comfortable writing PRDs, reviewing prototypes, and making detailed product decisions.
- Process builder: You've established product systems—planning, prioritization, research loops—in environments that didn't have them. You bring structure without bureaucracy.
Strongly Preferred:
- Experience in the Shopify ecosystem or adjacent ecommerce/retail tech
- Experience with experimentation/optimization platforms (A/B testing, personalization)
- History leading product at a design-led company (Airtable, Figma, etc.)
