Job Description
The Shirley Proctor Puller Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to “advance literacy and help close the achievement gap for students in the at-risk community of South St. Petersburg, FL.” All applicants must have passion for the mission as well as a desire to work to develop holistic solutions that create success for children and families in the community. There is also a high need for cultural sensitivity that comes with serving an at-risk population which has developed a healthy distrust of all things viewed as a part of “the system”. A majority of the families we serve are of African American descent so all staff must be comfortable working cross culturally if necessary. We welcome retired teachers in the industry who have a teaching certification that has not expired.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
The most critical instructional position within the SPPF: M.A.S.T.R. Kids Program, the Literacy teacher is directly responsible for utilizing i-Ready assessment results to guide and direct the learning experiences of each student in a class, group or individual setting. The goal is to have each student achieve and maintain grade level reading abilities. Must be available to work Monday - Thursday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
Instruction and Integration
The Literacy teacher shall:
- Demonstrate the ability to model, deliver, and craft rich student-centered learning experiences which enhance literacy and improve performance across reading domain areas.
- Teach concepts and social competencies with emphasis on English Language Arts skills.
- Plan a program for class, group and individualized instruction based on identified long-range goals and specific objectives.
- Use a variety of techniques and materials to instruct and motivate students.
- Use appropriate classroom management techniques.
- Apply knowledge of child growth and development.
- Confer with the Academic Program Leader, Assistant, pupil, parents, regarding the pupil’s academic and social development.
- Provide in-depth diagnostic reading evaluations (i-Ready) and structure programs of remediation for students reading below grade level and/or with challenges in any of the five key domain areas.
- Work with Academic Program Leader to put in place an ILP (Individual Learning Plan) for each student in his/her class. Tracks student adherence to the ILP. Maintains records appropriate to a diagnostic/prescriptive approach.
- Work with other teachers (STEAM, Reading Specialist, Math) to ensure coordinated approach to all students in his/her class.
- Develop tools for student to understand performance and track improvement in a way that builds self-discipline, ownership of academic outcomes and self-esteem.
- Shares knowledge and expertise with others to support professional development.
- Maintain required records.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Demonstrate the ability and preparedness to teach to different levels of students simultaneously and keep all challenged and growing. Some students will require basic literacy education while others will be more advanced. The SPPF philosophy is to meet each student where he/she is and help each grow.
Leadership and Professional Growth
The Literacy teacher shall:
- Participate in professional development experiences that allow him or her to observe, evaluate, and support instruction.
- Recommend tools, resources believed to be potentially useful for moving students forward in reading/literacy capability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Florida Teaching Certificate required.
- Familiarity with i-Ready assessment and tools strongly preferred.
- Reading or ELA emphasis in education preferred.
- Advanced degree preferred.
