Backend Engineer - Fintech

Location: Hybrid in Manhattan

Compensation: $175,000–$200,000 base salary

Backend experience in fintech / financial services / banking is a major plus

Our client is building an open-finance platform for wealth managers. The platform connects data from custodians, market-data providers, and other sources with bank and non-bank lenders to facilitate the free flow of capital across financial institutions and their clients.

Designed for the next generation of private banking, the platform is data-rich, highly secure, and built to scale.

About the Role

We are searching for an experienced Backend Engineer passionate about building the server-side systems that power a world-class wealth management platform.

You will design, build, and maintain scalable APIs, services, and data integrations that connect custodians, lenders, and financial data providers to the platform. In partnership with product and frontend teams, you will help shape a fast, secure, and highly reliable backend architecture.

This role reports directly to the CTO.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from planning through deployment.

• Design and build scalable, high-performance RESTful APIs and microservices using Python.

• Design and manage relational database schemas and write optimized SQL queries to support platform features and reporting needs.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Frontend, and DevOps teams to define and deliver backend capabilities that meet performance and reliability requirements.

• Write clean, efficient, and well-tested Python code with a strong emphasis on maintainability, type safety, and test coverage.

• Perform code reviews and provide constructive feedback to peers.

• Contribute to and improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and backend deployment workflows.

• Implement effective security protocols, data-protection measures, and storage solutions.

• Troubleshoot, debug, and upgrade software across environments.

• Ensure software meets all requirements for performance, scalability, configurability, and security.

• Contribute to product documentation and technical best practices.

• Consistent delivery of high-quality backend features with well-defined APIs, thorough test coverage, and on-time execution.

• Reduction in API errors, latency regressions, and backend incidents through proactive testing and monitoring.

• Measurable improvements in API response times, query performance, and service reliability across the platform.

• Positive collaboration feedback from frontend, security, and product teams on backend API quality and responsiveness.

• Contribution to documentation, refactoring, and platform reliability.

• On-time participation in planning, code reviews, and team ceremonies.

• Demonstrated ownership of features or services from development through deployment and monitoring.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

• Minimum of 3 years of backend engineering experience, ideally within FinTech or a high-growth startup environment.

• Strong proficiency in Python, including experience with FastAPI, Django, or similar backend frameworks.

• Strong command of SQL and relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL. Familiarity with non-relational databases is a plus.

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, containerization including Docker and Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure, particularly AWS.

• Strong understanding of RESTful API design, service-oriented architecture, and backend security best practices including authentication, encryption, and access control.

• Experience with testing frameworks and debugging tools.

• Proficiency with version-control tools such as Git.

• Excellent problem-solving and collaboration skills.

• Self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently and drive projects forward.
