JOB DESCRIPTION

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

     1.     200 day contract.

     2.     Salary based on the district Licensed Salary Schedule for the position.

     3.     FLSA status: Exempt.

     4.    10 days sick leave per year of employment.

     5.    3 days personal leave per year of employment.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Behavior Support Specialist provides leadership, coaching, and direct support to enhance student behavior, social-emotional functioning, and school climate across the district K-12. This position works within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework to strengthen Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavior systems, provide targeted interventions, and collaborate with staff and families to improve student outcomes.

 

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS (Required):

  1. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in behavior analysis, counseling, psychology, social work, education, or a related field
  2. Experience working with both children and adolescents in school or clinical settings
  3. Knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, trauma-informed practices, and MTSS/PBIS frameworks
  4. Training or experience in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) preferred
  5. Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):

Student Support

  • Provide direct behavioral and social-emotional support to students identified through MTSS processes
  • Assist in developing and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs)
  • Support students in developing self-regulation, coping, and social skills
  • Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data
  • Responding to behavioral crises

 

Assessment & Intervention

  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and assist teams in interpreting results
  • Use data to guide decision-making and intervention planning
  • Collaborate with school teams to ensure fidelity of behavior interventions
  • Collecting, tracking, and reporting behavior data
  • Monitoring intervention effectiveness

Teacher & Staff Support

  • Provide trainings for staff
  • Provide coaching and consultation to teachers and staff on classroom behavior management strategies
  • Model evidence-based practices and support implementation in classrooms
  • Assist in problem-solving challenging behaviors and creating proactive supports
  • Supporting staff with de-escalation strategies

Parent & Family Engagement

  • Provide parent trainings on behavior strategies, social-emotional development, and supporting students at home
  • Collaborate with families to ensure consistency between school and home supports
  • Serve as a liaison between school and home for behavioral concerns

Systems-Level Support (MTSS/School-wide positive behavior support system)

  • Support the growth, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Tier 1 and Tier 2 behavior systems
  • Assist schools in analyzing behavior data and identifying trends
  • Help design and deliver staff professional development related to behavior supports
  • Promote positive school climate and proactive behavior practices
  • Building positive, proactive behavior systems
  • Supporting PBIS or district-wide initiatives

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings (IEP, 504, MTSS, etc.)
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records in compliance with district and state requirements
  • Stay current on best practices in behavior support and school-based mental health
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and families
  • Strong organizational and data analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating as part of a team

Working Conditions

  • Frequent interaction with students exhibiting behavioral challenges
  • Travel between campuses as needed
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in crisis situations

 

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS and/or REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time, walk, occasionally stoop, perform manual manipulation, reach outward and above the shoulder, as well as occasional climbing, squatting or kneeling, bending or grasping.  Must be able to see up close and at a distance.  Must have the dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Environment:  Most job responsibilities for this position are performed in an indoor school environment that is temperature controlled (heated and cooled) according to the season.  Noise levels are usually low to moderate.

Intelligence:
  Requires the ability to read and follow a variety of instructions on district, state, and federal websites as well as hard copy.

Language Ability
: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondences.  Requires the ability to prepare reports, etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of grammar.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to give oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively.  Must possess the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.  Must be able to deliver effective presentations to both small and large audiences.
